Countdown to Mother's Day! My Mom's Top 13 Favorite Movies(13-10)

in #movies6 years ago (edited)

Mother's Day is coming May 13th( For those of you who forgot now would be a good time to get a gift) and I decided to ask my mom what her top 13 movies were in honor of the date. Then I watched the ones I hadn't seen and re-watched a few with her this weekend. Now let's jump in!

Number 13! The Ghost and The Darkness

The Ghost and The Darkness stars Val Kilmer as John Henry Patterson(interesting guy, look him up) an engineer attempting to bridge a river on an east African rail line. The British government wants to beat the Germans and the French to the punch so no delays can be tolerated. Unfortunately for them and Col.Patterson a pair of man eating lions have started to plague the work site. Based on the true story of The Man Eaters of Tsavo this movie was said to have been made less fantastic than the true account to be more believable to audiences. The movie got a muted response from critics but a positive one from audiences. I enjoyed the movie and my mom loves it. It keeps a good balance of humor and action with a dash of horror. Also featuring Michael Douglas and Bernard Hill with a great supporting performance by John Kani. The Ghost and The Darkness is a great movie about an even more unbelievable real event. All told The Man Eaters of Tsavo are said to have claimed over 130 victims. Grab a rifle or two(or three) and watch The Ghost and The Darkness!

Number 12! Operation Petticoat

Operation Petticoat stars Cary Grant and Tony Curtis in a comedy voyage through the early years of World War 2 in the Pacific. Grant( Lieutenant Commander Matt Sherman) captain's The Sea Tiger(a US Submarine) through it's journey to limp to a naval yard for repairs after being crippled by a Japanese air attack. To get moving he has to enlist the aid of Lieutenant Nick Holden, a man with no desire to fight the war and no experience with any actual naval duties. He is appointed Supply Officer( thief) and the fun begins. Things only get worse as The Sea Tiger is forced to take on five stranded Army nurses. If you haven't seen the inside of a submarine things can get pretty tight. It's a classic comedy with lots of great moments ( many of which were inspired by actual historical events) and great performances from both of the lead actors. Operation Petticoat has great pacing and an interesting story which is a lot more than can be said for many modern comedies. The movie was primarily made because Cary Grant was a childhood hero to  Tony Curtis and he wanted to recreate the feeling that he got seeing Grant in Operation Tokyo(1943) which made him join the real U.S. navy in WW2 with an eye towards sub duty. I really liked it and my mom loves Cary Grant and especially loves this movie. Break out the red and white paint and go watch Operation Petticoat!

Number 11!  The Guardians Of The Galaxy

The Guardians Of The Galaxy is my mom's favorite Marvel movie( and mine too). Featuring the great ensemble cast of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Copper, and Vin Diesel this movie is amazing. Not only does it establish an entire team of heroes, it also tell's a great story with real emotional weight. We both love the soundtrack which really elevates the movie to something great. This movie is not just good for a superhero movie, it is great in all respects. As time goes on I think it will be regarded as one of the best movies of the 2010's. It is fun from start to finish, never drags or has a dull moment. Everyone is perfectly cast and turns in a great performance. Michael Rooker deserves praise for his portrayal of Yondu and Lee Pace brings an air of dread and menace to Ronan. I won't lie, I really did shed a tear for Groot the first time I saw the movie. In the space of two hours I cared enough about a walking, talking tree to mourn his death, what else do you need to know? Grab your Awesome Mix and settle in for a fantastic ride with The Guardians Of The Galaxy!

Number 10! Secondhand Lions

Secondhand Lions is a difficult movie to pin down. It has a lot of funny moments but I wouldn't say it's a comedy. It has a lot of serious moments but I wouldn't say it's a drama. It falls somewhere in the middle and that's where the strength of the movie lies for me. Starring Haley Joel Osment(I see dead people kid), Robert Duvall, and Michael Caine Secondhand Lions is a great movie. It follows the story of Walter(Osment) beginning when is irresponsible mother dumps him off for the summer at his uncle's farm. It slowly comes to light that Hub(Duvall) and Garth(Caine) are quite eccentric and like to do things their own way. Though disdainful at first they grow to love Walter when they find he is great at annoying other money seeking relatives and he learns about their past fantastic adventures and the source of their incredible wealth. The title stems from an animal the uncles buy when Walter convinces them they should spend some money and enjoy it. They buy the secondhand lion to hunt but when it arrives they find it is an old tame lioness that they don't have the heart to kill. Secondhand Lions has plenty of laughs and a lot of heart. My mom loves it and watches it all the time. I didn't like it much when I was younger but I grew to appreciate it more as I grew up and I have to say it is a great original film. It's refreshing to see a good movie that's not based on anything else or relying on nostalgia to get you to care. Load up the Lion Chow and watch Secondhand Lions!

That brings us to the end of this installment of the list, part 2 is coming soon. My mother also wanted to make it clear that these movies are in no particular order( it was too painful to rank them) and that they just represent 13 of her favorites. Let me know down below what some of your mom's favorite movies are. Thanks for reading!

Haha The Ghost and the Darkness was when Val Kilmer looked like he was going to be a big star but we know how that worked out lol. That is a pretty watchable movie though.
