Countdown To Mother's Day! My Mom's Top 13 Favorite Movies (9-6)

in #movies6 years ago (edited)

In case you missed the last installment this list is my Mom's top 13 movies in honor of Mother's Day on May 13th. Now on to the list!

Number 9! Mulan

If my mom had to pick one Disney movie to watch for the rest of her life it would be this one. Mulan(Ming-Na) tells the story of a young Chinese girl who pretends to be a man to take her crippled father's place in the army when a Hun invasion forces total mobilization. The spirits of her ancestors know she must be helped so they send Mushu( Eddie Murphy) to awaken a powerful ancient guardian, which he botches horribly. They set out to train with the assembling army under the command of Captain Li Shang(B.D. Wong) and it quickly becomes apparent Mulan will need a lot of luck and courage to make it through. My mother and I both enjoy Mulan and the movie has one of the best blends of serious emotion and humor in a Disney film to date. Worth noting is Miguel Ferrer's performance as Shan Yu, his chilling voice over of the Hun warlord actually scared me as a kid. The rest of the movie is perfectly cast and the animation is beautiful. Mulan is just one of those all around good movies you want to re-watch all the time. So be a man and go watch Mulan!

Number 8! The Patriot

The Patriot is a tale of adventure, tragedy, and family set against the back drop of the American revolution. Featuring great performances by Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, Jason Issacs, and an ensemble of supporting characters, The Patriot tells the story of Benjamin Martin(Gibson), a veteran of The French and Indian War who struggles to stay out of the war but is dragged in by his patriotic, adventure seeking son. After incurring the wrath of the local British troops Martin is forced to get into the war whether he wants to or not. Colonel Tavington( Issacs) proves to be a brutal and cunning foe and their game of cat and mouse is the main focus of the movie. The Patriot is just one of those movies for my mom and I that we never get tired off. The plot is engaging and interesting with a bit of humor thrown in. The supporting cast really shine in this movie notably Tchéky Karyo(Major Jean Villeneuve) ,and Jay Arlen Jones(Occam). This is just one of those rare "perfect storm" movies where every element comes together into a great movie. We usually re-watch The Patriot every 4th of July and I doubt this year will be any different. Make your mark and watch The Patriot!

Number 7! Kingsman : The Golden Circle

Kingsman: The Golden Circle harkens back to the classic gadget and over the top villain  filled Bond films of the 60's and 70's with a modern twist. My mom liked Kingsman but she loved Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The movie is a great sequel in my opinion as well. It takes all of the things that were great in the original and cranks them to 11 and adds just enough new characters and gadgets ( and an interesting new villain) to keep it fresh without losing what made it fun. KGC features excellent performances by Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Halle Berry, Pedro Pascal,Julianne Moore, and Elton John( yes really). When drug queen Poppy Adams(Moore) makes her move for world domination it's up to Eggsy( Egerton) and Merlin (Strong) to stop her before time runs out. Featuring great stylized action, a cool soundtrack, and plenty of humor KGC definitely didn't feel like 141 minutes for us. To sum up how much my mom enjoyed it let me say that my mom doesn't like going to the theater to see movies because people ruin them with their phones or any other assorted buffoonery they can come up with. She willing went to see this movie twice! Grab your spy glasses and saddle up for a wild ride with Kingsman: The Golden Circle!

Number 6! Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House

Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is a 1948 film based on the novel of the same name. It features Cary Grant as the titular Mr. Blandings and follows his attempt to not only stave off financial ruin when he gets saddled with a run down country home but also to come up with a slogan for his latest advertising assignment Wham! brand ham. With things quickly spiraling out of control Mr. Blandings hopes he can make it out of this with his wallet and marriage intact. One of my mom's favorite actors is Cary Grant and he really shines in this movie. An entertaining comedy story about what happens when you follow your heart instead of your head and how much one family can take before they break, Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House never has a dull moment. Supporting his fantastic performance are Myrna Loy as Mrs. Blandings, Louise Beavers as Gussie, Reginald Denny as Henry Simms and Melvyn Douglas as Bill Cole who all do a great job. The movie also featured some creative marketing with the studio building 73 "Dream Homes" across America and raffling them off. Despite being skeptical the first time my mom watched it with me I actually enjoyed the movie a lot. I guess it goes to show that a good movie is a good movie no matter when it was made. Remember to never let your wife pick the paint and settle in for a hilarious time with Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House!

Thanks for reading! Part 3 coming soon!

Haha The Patriot wasn't bad. It is a shame Mel Gibson turned out to be crazy and kind of a dick which ruined his career. He made a bunch of movies that I liked over the years.

Yeah it seems like a lot of actors turn out to be crazy dicks lol. He did make a lot of good movies though, focus on the good I guess.
