The Preparation: A mother and a son with an intellectual disability
A Korean movie, The Preparation, is a story of an old mother who has a son who has an intellectual disability. The son, In-kyu, is 30 years old, but he behaves just like a 5-year-old boy. There are not many things he can do by himself. From waking up to going to bed, his mother assists him in every aspect of his life.
One day, the mother fell down and lost her consciousness. Opening her eyes, she was lying on the bed in a hospital. She was told that only about 6 months are left for her life. What could she do before she dies? If trained, In-kyu would be able to live an independent life?
Fortunately, in the movie, The Preparation, In-kyu is properly trained by his mother to basically function and live a normal life by himself. However, in one scene in the movie, I saw an alternative future for In-kyu. That is not what I have seen, but In-kyu's mother has seen at the facility for protection.
When you are walking on the street, have you ever seen a fairly old adult with an intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder? In my case, and in my country, the answer is NO. It may be because most of the adults with such disabilities are literally prisoned at the facilities. It is so sad situation.
When some individuals with such disabilities make a crime or a mistake, many people become outrageous, saying that they should be in custody and they should not be free to walk in public places. What the shit! Do not they have the right to be a normal human?
Some societies are very hospitable to people with disabilities, but other societies are very hostile. It is hard to admit that it is. But it is true.
