Freejack (film): Cheesy sci-fi from the 90's - actually kind of fun

in #movies5 years ago

When you think of sci-fi actors Emilio Estivez doesn't exactly spring to mind. This film is good (to me) for reasons that were probably not intended at the time it was made in 1992.

Seeing as how it is now 10 years later than the "future" parts of this movie, the imagery that is used in the film is actually pretty amusing because especially the vehicles are completely absurd. They don't even seem terribly functional and some of them are quite obvious just a bright paint job on some sort of construction or military vehicle that was used in the 90's. They also seem to really be interested in making almost anything a convertible.

Of course, like most movies about the future, there is a terrible divide between the rich people that have it all and the majority of people who have very little and the government doesn't really pay much attention to what the lower class people want or need. This is years before Hunger Games.

The film also stars Mick Jagger as Victor Vacendak, the main baddy who is pursuing Emilio throughout the film.

He isn't terrible in his acting, but it is quite easy to understand why he really wasn't featured in a great many films throughout the ages. I find his involvement to be quite humorous but then again, I found pretty much this entire film to be humorous. It received almost entirely negative reviews upon its release but like many lower budget films depicting the future from the 80's and 90's, they are actually quite fun to watch now that we are actually past the years these films are depicting.

The storyline, which is pretty much defined at the very start of the film, is extremely predictable and through the 90 minutes or so of runtime there isn't a single "gotcha!" moment that occurs. People really shouldn't watch this movie expecting a robust story though. I found it to be fun purely because the depictions of the distant year 2009 are very funny to look back on and see how much of it they got totally wrong.

On a scale of "Urgh!" to "Wowsers!" I give Freejack the rating of.....

somewhere between

I’ve been looking to watch it for awhile (free) because the last time I saw it was 2008. I kind of like it in the “oooh that movie” type way.

Wow my goodness? This isn't really the 2009 we saw in this depiction haha the vehicles are aburd and obviously they got the military thingy wrong lol but I think one thing that'll thrill me about this is that attempt to depict the future from the 1980s and really nothing spectacular lol, thanks for reviewing this, ill check it out.

You have to admit, whether it was good or not, this movie had a pretty fantastic cast! I remember seeing this on the shelf in the video store (VHS) and asking my dad if we could rent it. Since I was kid, the premise sounded awesome. I remember being entertained by it.
