The Hunt for Red October

in #movies6 years ago

A Silent Submarine.

A "simple" man solves the puzzle of the Red October. This movie manages to put the people at it's centre not the technology. Hence, the movie has a more emotional feel and explores the characters in greater detail. It also does well to avoid the "America is best" propaganda angle.

Keeping in mind that during the 1980's the Soviet Union was painted as the great potential menace/destroyer to the Western way of life. Hence, they must be kept in check by the West having more fire power and better technology. This movies takes the view that not all Russians are evil.

Hence, when a new type of submarine is built, one that is capable of running silently and hence not tripping any of the Western defences. The Americans are immediately on edge, this is further heightened when they learn that the captain of the Submarine has gone rogue.

The immediate question is what is the captains intent, the Soviet government's line is that he is planning to start the next World War. A US CIA analyst believes that the captain is trying to defect to the US, and that the captain is ensuring he will be granted asylum by delivering the Soviet's greatest submarine. Which one is the captain's true intentions?

There are a number of plot twists to keep you interested, and the supporting do an excellent job. This is a movie that will be enjoyed by more than just the "action" buffs.
