Captain Marvel Initial Box Office Tracking is here – But are These Numbers True?

When the previous Captain Marvel trailer was release, the ticket sale for the movie also began. Now if you didn't know this, Captain Marvel fans are called Carol Corps. And they reported for duty when tickets went on sale. I saw it on Twitter that the really big fans tried to get everyone to buy tickets as soon as possible.

They were successful. Captain Marvel is now the 3rd highest Marvel movie in pre-sale tickets in the first 24 hours. I was only slightly surprised by this fact. Many people deemed the previous trailer the first good Captain Marvel trailer and I guess it helped build the hype.

Now the first initial tracking numbers are in and they are huge. The tracking number is for U.S. alone and it is between 140$-180$ million dollars for opening weekend. For comparison stakes Wonder Woman opened with 103$ million dollars, and Captain Marvel surpassing the ,i>DC hit is huge win. Especially since Wonder Woman made over 800$ million dollars total, with not so great overseas box office numbers. Captain Marvel like Black Panther could suffer from the same problem. Overseas audiences like more action and less talking in their movies. I also get the sense that they like their movies to be less political. However, such strong initial tracking number combined with strong overseas box office for Captain Marvel could lead the movie close to the billion dollars club.

Marvel is doing a pretty good job promoting this movie. The hype for Captain Marvel is already here, mostly. However, if you didn’t know this, there is also a lot of hate for Captain Marvel out there. People who really dislike her character the reasons that go from being too poorly written to being too SJW. I don't think we'll see a Solo: A Star Wars Story (who also had really good initial tracking numbers before they crashed just before the movie's release) level of backlash, but, I think that the hate is enough to put some caution on these great numbers. Kelly Sue DeConnick run on the comics inspired the movie and she is even a consultant on the movie. Her run is considered iconic by fans, but is really hated by some. It also didn't sale really well, 41,582 copies for issue number one is pretty bad and it went downhill from there. So that is also not good news for the movie. Her run transformed Carol Danvers' Ms. Marvel to Captain Marvel. As I go online by Reading Carol Danvers, people privately send me messages about how much they hate the change that Danvers made from being Ms. Marvel to Captain Marvel. Like I care about their opinions or can do anything about it. But I do hope that these people will not influence the box office. Marvel movie fans are super loyal, but even movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp fail to make an impact. I hope that Marvel fans will really rally for the movie and shut up the haters.

Another strange thing that I see is that Wonder Woman fans are really trying to tear this movie down. They compare everything that is comparable and explaining how Diana did it first and did it better, trying to make Captain Marvel look like an unimportant copycat. The war between Marvel and DC never ends. Although I hardly see any similarities between the characters and Carol Danvers seems so different from Wonder Woman.

I think that $140 million dollar is the more accurate number, and it could be lower and the movie will still be considered a success. Don't forget thatDr. Strange's 75$ million dollar opening weekend was considered a huge success. This movie is trying to be an event movie, representing women and feminism, but in the end, it just needs to be a good movie and a grand one. The trailers make it look grand, connecting it to all of the Marvel universe seems to be a really smart move, and making it almost a cosmic movie with the Skrulls. Now, it just needs to be a good movie. I really hope it will be. And I also hope it will be a billion dollar movie, but I am keeping my expectations low.
