Why the fuck should you watch “The Favourite"?
• “Money, power and women” is the formula for your happiness.
• You are longing to up your manipulation game and need an educational movie for the studies.
• You were as excited as us, when you heard that the great Sophie from Peep Show (Olivia Colman) won the Oscar for her lead performance and want to now know, what she got it for
• You have a hint that there is something weird going on in the back rooms (and bedrooms) of governmental intuitions.

Wanna see a dirty adventure, where everything is a weapon: a gun, a book, lesbian sex, tea and even marriage? Wanna see a movie where pigeons don’t live long and living life is like playing chess (only more deadly)? Well “The Favourite” can please all these desires you have. I promise.

You probably already know about the Greek film director Yorgos Lanthimos, who is one of the authors of Weird Greek Wave. With every movie he has presented some really strange and captivating realities, while his movies have been haunting, unique and thought-provoking. After playing with our brains with psychological thriller “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” and commenting the dating scene in his black comical satire “Lobster”, he has come out with his third English language film “The Favourite”. And oh yes, there is a nice amount of absurdness and weirdness in this movie too.

This time Lanthimos takes the costume drama genre and twists his freaky mind around it by turning it into a witty study of power relations, manipulation and thirst for power. So no, don't get misdirected by the synopsis in IMDB, it's not some boring historical drama set in 18th century England with tea drinking, fancy dresses, suppressed sexual desire and dialogue spoken with nose high up in the air. Neh, “The Favourite” tells quite a captivating story about an eccentric and neurotic Queen (Olivia Colman) and two other women (Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone) who try to take advantage of her easily manipulated nature. This intense triangle is presented with damn awesome performances by the three actors, while the movie puts a lot of effort in character development and the witty dialogue. When the movie picks up speed, the things that the character say and do in the fancy ass English milieu makes the events stranger and funnier with every scene.

In conclusion: Even though it’s a costume drama, it’s not a torture, but an actual entertainment.

Why the fuck you shouldn’t watch “The Favourite"?
• If you don’t like drag, you won’t like 18th century upper class Englishmen.
• You like fancy and polite costume dramas about royal people. This is not it.
• You think that the Queen and the British people of the past should only be treated with historical accuracy. You know, put on the pedestal in Stonehenge and worshipped with nude wild dancing and…ok I have no idea how the Kingdom-thing actually works.
• You are a male chauvinist.
