500 Arhats Exhibition in National Museum and Faces of Arhats

in #museum5 years ago

One thing great in this exhibition was the abundance of expression of faces.
The material was the granite that was very hard for carving.
So it was impossible to carve the sculptures elaborately like as the marble ones.

With those difficulty, the masonry in Goryeo dynasty’d expressed the face of various emotions, peace, sorrow, joy, sad and happiness.

In this post, I’d like to show some of those expressions. There were tens of arhats in the exhibition. I’d like to share all of them with you.

awesome art and history..i miss your post sir..its been a while i'm gone and powering down due to some needs..happy to be back again..

Interesting figures with expressions that have survived such a long time... Were they carved by a single maker? Or is it a collection of anonymous makers for a person of power?

The Masons or artists just captured the expressions really well with these statues @slowwalker :D They are very talented and masters of their crafts back then truly.

I go with your other ones, but I think the first is exhaustion :)

👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Arhat “one who has killed all his/her enemies: craving, aversion and ignorance in their totality” love the sculptures.

not bad for granite 👍👍!

@slowwalker Heya, thanks for sharing these great sculptures.... They look so adorable and cute to... Undoubtedlly they are very hard to crave and one more thing I noticed is that we will see the expression on it as the same feelings or mood we are in.... Thanks for sharing... Really appreciate =)

Yeah it sure is hard to read some of the expressions ;)
but hope you enjoyed it out there!!

@slowwalker, Yeah that's hard to understand what's means of expressions of Arhat's faces. But I know Arhats meaning like you. So we can get little idea what's looked by them. It's amazing creativity of masonry in Goryeo dynasty. More important to see these stone statues current and future generations.
