Mushroom Season

In my opinion, the above photograph is better than the one below. Why? Because of the shadows and the light. The shadow on the tree roots on the foreground and the mushrooms in the background, brings more focus on a smaller group of mushroom. The group isn't vertical or horizontal but diagonal. If I would want this photo to be in my opinion more "perfect", I would crop it a bit from the right and top. That would bring the target a bit more to the right. Not so centered.

IMG_8073IMG_8073.JPGCamera: Canon EOS 550D - Shutter Speed: 1/500 sec - Aperture: f/8 - ISO Sensitivity: 500 - Exposure Compensation: -1 EV - Focal Length: 270 mm

Next pair.

IMG_8067IMG_8067.JPGCamera: Canon EOS 550D - Shutter Speed: 1/200 sec - Aperture: f/6.3 - ISO Sensitivity: 125 - Exposure Compensation: 0 EV - Focal Length: 110 mm

Vertical and horizontal. Mushrooms going diagonal. First impression for me is that I like the 8071 photo more. But few of the mushrooms are overexposed. I don't have raw images, only jpg versions, so this is basically what you get. There's very little one can do to jpg photos so that it still looks natural. Too much light. More shadows and darkness it is.

Back to the first photo (8067). This one has overexposed parts too, but not that much. Problem is that the mushrooms are right in the middle. Or is it a problem? Rule of thirds, golden ratio. Does one always have to obey those rules? Well, if I'd obey, I would crop with a heavy hand from the right side and from the bottom. Or should it be from the top? Decisions, decisions.

IMG_8071IMG_8071.JPGCamera: Canon EOS 550D - Shutter Speed: 1/125 sec - Aperture: f/5.6 - ISO Sensitivity: 100 - Exposure Compensation: -1 EV - Focal Length: 76 mm

Final three.

IMG_8075IMG_8075.JPGCamera: Canon EOS 550D - Shutter Speed: 1/400 sec - Aperture: f/8 - ISO Sensitivity: 640 - Exposure Compensation: -1 EV - Focal Length: 270 mm

Putting things right in the middle means photographer really want's to highlight something. Is it necessary here, or should this photo (8075) again be cropped? A little from the left, a little from the top?

IMG_8074IMG_8074.JPGCamera: Canon EOS 550D - Shutter Speed: 1/400 sec - Aperture: f/8 - ISO Sensitivity: 800 - Exposure Compensation: -1 EV - Focal Length: 270 mm

Would these mushrooms in photo 8074 have needed some cleanup? Stick and pine needles away before taking the photo? I usually try to photograph nature as it is and rather move myself, my perception and view or change the target than start molding the object or it's surroundings to my liking. But having said that, this photo would be more interesting if I would have sprinkled few more needles to the lower left corner. And if I would have had a better focus on the raggedy edges of the mushrooms.

Moving on to the last photo.

IMG_8076IMG_8076.JPGCamera: Canon EOS 550D - Shutter Speed: 1/500 sec - Aperture: f/8 - ISO Sensitivity: 400 - Exposure Compensation: -1 EV - Focal Length: 270 mm

Rule of thirds. Something on the foreground, focus on the mushroom, not overexposed. Didn't clean the surroundings and didn't care about the fact that few of the leafs are ripped.

Would you change anything in this last photo? What did you think about the other ones?

My photographs (and art = design, illustration, graphics) and my photographing skills or the lack of it can always be criticized. Any kind of feedback is welcome, and in addition I'm using #photoanalysis tag, the idea of @markkujantunen, just to make crystal clear that criticism and feedback is always welcome. And as @markkujantunen posted:

By the way, I give you permission to re-post any picture I have published in this series in the comments of a post of mine under this tag.

My statement:

To make things a bit simpler, if you publish my photo remixed in this posts comments, my mention of CC BY-SA license in this post is enough. You don't have to copy paste it again in the comment.

Sort:

If the mushroom is the main subject of the last one, maybe landscape format would be better with the mushroom placed off center and toward the lower left. It should in crystal clear and sharp focus and fill a greater portion of the frame. In this one, the lower half of the photo serves little purpose. The leaves right below the mushroom are in focus which makes the compete for attention with the mushroom. There is one blade of grass in front of the mushroom cap. It would be better ripped off or cut so as not to have it in the picture at all.

Thank you for sharing some of your older pictures!

Couldn't do the landscape in photoshop 'cause ---> time. But when taking the picture, few landscape options of the same mushroom would have been nice too. I haven't got those. But for the rest of it, you mean like this?

IMG_8076_c.jpg

No grass, blurred leaves, cropped lower half away.

Thank you for commenting and analyzing. :)

You got nice light in the photos. I also like 8071. Good composition and show a little of the enviroment.

Thank you. It was in bright daylight when I took these photos, and the light came through the pine branches.

Post made a lot of fun. Everyone should make such posters.
