Throwback Track Review: Lorde "Green Light"

in #music6 years ago

In March of 2017, Lorde released the lead single of her new album "Melodrama". It was a comeback that was very unexpected and different, because it had very few similarities to her debut, which was filled with teenage angst and featured lots of minimalistic production. In "Green Light" the kiwi singer expresses all of her anger, her heartbreak and absolute raw emotion. "Those great whites, they have big teeth/
Oh, they bite you" she sings with passionate hate to her ex-partner. She clearly still hasn't dropped her favorite teeth motive which she liked to use a lot in "Pure Heroine". She must have amazing dental hygiene, because she really likes her teeth. The mellow piano production of the first verse and the pre-chorus builds up and then explodes like a supernova in the chorus with hype piano and booming claps.

In this song, Lorde expresses the first steps of breaking up, while still longing for love, she rushes to the hope of moving on and tries to hold on to it while waiting for the "Green Light", a signal, a sign that she can finally feel free and get on with her life not being stuck in her thoughts about her past. Overall this song is a brilliant representation of her dealing with heartbreak. While it didn't rule the charts, it's carved into our hearts and has our ears screaming in awe.
