My Favourite Hip Hop/Rap Albums of 2018

in #music6 years ago

Yo Steemsta's

Whatsup my G's? How's it hanging? So when I'm chilling at my crib kicking it with the homies and lately Hip Hop and Rap have been my genre of choice (though I would say Trance and House is the genre I listen to most). Unfortunately, we haven't been spoilt with amazing lyricism this year and what hits the top of the charts is mostly mumble rap and trap garbage.

However, in this pile of trash there a few albums that have stood out for me and I'll give you my top 5 for 2018. If you're a fucking hoe you that's part of the Gucci gang Gucci gang, Panda Panda Panda style of music you may have missed out on these bangers.

1. Rae Sremmurd - SR3MM

I know my first pick may seem strange especially when you look at the rest of the list but I really feel this album is highly underrated and probably one of the best to release this year. SR3MM is 3 disk album with 27 tracks and there's something for everyone. Dance music, ATL hip-hop tracks, R&B and really shows how Rae Sremmurd have started to evolve as a duo and started to explore new concepts.

They are no Outkast and SR3MM is not the most lyrically impressive albums by a long shot, but it's put together well and one of the few albums you can listen to from start finish without skipping.

My favourite tracks are CLOSE, Perplexing Pegasus, Guatemala and Touch Screen Navigation.

Rae Sremmurd - SR3MM

2. Eminem - Kamakazie

The Rap God is back and proves why his one of the all time greats, Slim produces some of the most insanely consturcted verses you'll ever hear in the modern era and doesn't hold back as he takes shots at literally everybody. If you get passed the beef hype the album created and simply listen to this master of battle rap go at it, you'll seriously apprecaite the bars Marshall lays down, some of it is pure genius.

You won't find my radio hits on here as this album was designed to hit out at the indsutry as a whole, but as a fan, I can appreciate that!

My favourite tracks are The Ringer, Lucky You, Kamikaze

Eminem - Kamakazie

3. Darke - Scorpion

This big old softy could literally drop a 3 song album and the internet would go crazy with the emotional memes. Drake got everyone in their feelings with this album and don't get me wrong it was decent, just not as strong as his previous offering more life.

If you're into light skin homie hip hop and radio tracks then this one will be right up your alley.

My favourite tracks are Mob ties, After Dark and Don't Matter To Me

Drake - Scorpion

4. Travis Scott - Astroworld

Travis Scott aka Cactus Jack is back with his 3rd studio album and probably his most creative and interesting offering to date and a big improvement on Birds in the trap sing McKnight, this album, is as he would say, It's lit! Travie is no lyricist that's for sure and edges dangerously close to the mumble rap genre but he has got a way of blurring genres that works for him and I cannot fault that.

My favourite tracks are No Bystanders, Can't Say, Coffee Bean and Sicko mode

Astroworld

5. The Carter V - Lil Wayne

Weezy F baby is back with the follow up to Carter IV and after years off the scene, he reminds us why he's still one of the best MC's in the game. His flow is one of a kind and the self-proclaimed "greatest rapper alive" delivers on his promise with some of the sickest bars and complex rhyme schemes that even EM would stand up and clap for.

The album starts off strong but later loses its way a bit and while Wayne seems reinvigorated his a little rusty and may need time to get back into the swing of things. But even a Tunchi not on his best is still better than most of what these so-called rappers have put out this year.

If you're a fan you'll forgive lil Toon for some of his transgressions on this album and if you can't then just remember Carter 3 and 4 and never forget.

My favourite tracks are Don't cry, Let it fly and Can't be broken

The Carter V - Lil Wayne

The genre keeps expanding

Trap and Mumble rap have continued to make headlines with its easy to understand repetitive lyrics on a club dance music type of beat, party music is what sells at the moment but the hype will soon fade.

Hip-hop and Rap have been evolving for years as new artists come into the game with their unique sound and then once it hits mainstream it either opens up doors for other artists who have been in this obscure genre or copycats wanting to ride the wave.

We've seen this with G-Funk, Gangsta rap, Dirty South, Indie Rap, East Coast Rap, Latin Rap andI'mm sure we will continue to see this type of behaviour proliferate the trap/mumble scene until it becomes played out.

We simply need to ride this wave out and then get back to what this music is all about, creating music that actually has a message and that speaks to people!

Have at it
