Another Night, Another Band 7: Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra
Last night the hubs and I ventured out into the city.
Our destination: Columbia City Theater for the Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra show.
Seattle... 💚
Columbia City, located southeast of downtown Seattle, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. It was annexed by Seattle in 1907 and today it’s main business district is landmark protected. This area is not one we frequent so it felt like we were in a completely different town.
Neighborhood views.
The night started with dinner at an Italian spot called Tutta Bella. This local chain has been around since opening the Columbia City location in 2004. They specialize in wood fired pizzas, but also serve different pasta dishes.
Tutta Bella’s historic exterior.
Eatin’ time.
After it was time for dessert. We walked down the street to another Seattle favorite, Molly Moon’s. Molly Moon’s makes and serves the most delicious ice cream. I had a scoop of salted caramel drizzled with hot fudge sauce.
No icecream shot! Curses...
After eating ALL the food, it was time to head our show at the historic Columbia City Theater.
Columbia City Theater opened in 1917. Over the year’s the venue has hosted vaudeville performances, jazz acts, movies and burlesque. Legendary performers Duke Ellington, Jimi Hendrix and Macklemore have each taken the stage here.
Open for business since 1917.
The venue has a very classic old school vibe. Walking in felt a bit like stepping back in time to the era of gangsters and speakeasys. The exposed brick walls and stunning bar definitely accentuated the “days gone by” feel of the theater.
Vibes
“Bar keep, one lemon drop please.”
Time for the show.
Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra
All I can say is WOW! I have never been to a concert with this sort of vibe. Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra is best described as a Jamaican Jazz orchestra. According to the band, their sound is:
Duke Ellington meets Jamaica: the big band jazz arrangements of the 1940s colliding with the sound of early Jamaica!
The group is made up of approximately 20 musicians, 14 of which were playing some sort of horn (saxe, trumpet, tombone...). While there is no lead singer, Hepcat’s Greg Lee acted as MC/host for last night’s show. The performance felt like something from a 1940’s dance hall.

The people watching at the show was amazing. There were lots of women with partially shaved heads and tattoos wearing beautiful retro dresses. Some man was dancing with a cane as an accessory. There were man buns, white guys with dreds, another crew wearing over sized basketball jerseys and athletic shorts. I wish I could have gotten photos of the diverse crowd.

WOW! I like them! Beautiful music!
Beautiful music and talented musicians! I was reading online that most of the performers have won Grammy Awards and performed at the Oscars etc.

Oh ya! What fun! Brings back memories of being down in New Orleans. Lot's of horn players down there. Who is the main singer? Wish I could have experienced it live. Great to a least see the video. Thanks for sharing!
The main singer this night was Greg Lee from the band Hepcat. But he was just a special guest. The Orchestra performs with different “hosts”. The focus was mainly the musicians. ☺️
He sure added a lot of fun to it. Lucky you to have caught them on the night he was a guest.
@dfinney Being a stage performer, not a singer, I admire anyone who can get up on a stage and perform any type of musical act. This looks like it was a fantastic experience and I bet you can't wait to go back again! Jazz meets Jamaican sounds interesting. Do you know if they have any samplings online to listen to?
I am sure they must. There are also 3 YouTube links within my post of the show we attended if you missed those. ☺️
@dfinney I've been having issues with my phone and service provider that I thought would get fixed today but hasn't. That's why I was asking. I will check out the videos tomorrow either on a friend's phone or when I go back to the cell phone store to let them know that changing out the Sim card did not work. :)
grooovy, and smooth. That's pretty good, they have that scat-cat feel, then mixing in the Jamaican. The only thing I saw missing was they needed a steel drum, that would have topped it off nicely. A jazzy steel drum, that could be interesting.
A jazzy steel drum would have been excellent. It would have given them a little bit of a Star Wars cantina band vibe. 😀
That's hilarious, but your right... I could hear it now...
