Wallflower by Larkins immediately strikes as a hip-swayer that would be incredible to hear live

Rising stars Larkins’ ‘Wallflower’ is a dreamy B side to their latest smash single ‘Sugar Sweet’, released on Good Soldier Records.

Boasting a music video with more than half a million views, ‘Sugar Sweet’ is the perfect accompaniment to ‘Wallflower’, which definitely deserves all the attention that it’s getting. The Manchester band are currently trailblazing the alternative/indie scene with buzz from Radio 1, the Independent and Dork Magazine (amongst others) and playing shows in LA, Texas, London and a sold-out gig at the legendary Manchester Albert Hall.

Amongst playing sold-out shows and racking up numerous streams and views, busy boys Larkins also smashed out an interview in conversation with alt/indie menswear magazine Boys By Girls last month. My favourite part of the interview, which I see reflected well in ‘Wallflower’, is that the band admitted ‘in the beginning, we were keen to put ourselves in a category or box’, before realising being true to themselves was paramount. Being something of an important lesson I learned myself over the past year, this admission made the band feel even more utterly down to earth and accessible. Integrity has aided Larkins in surpassing genre conventions, such as with ‘Wallflower’, which really thinks outside of the box for a B-side alternative track.

Coming a long way from their hometown of Glossop and debut single, TV Dream, ‘Wallflower’ immediately strikes as a hip-swayer that would be incredible to hear live. Reverb-y synths enter the track like a traveller stepping inside from the rain, as warm tones permeate the silence. A scoop of percussion is then added to the mix before a sunny guitar flourish, and like a wallflower, the track blooms. Lead singer Joe enters with an entrancing falsetto that blends wonderfully with the rest of the track and its instrumentation.

The track's lyrics are simple but sincere, repeating ‘hold your heart while you swim’ and ‘I’ll be your wallflower’ throughout. Listeners can ascertain from these lyrics that the message is straightforward, despite appearing metaphorical, and aided by effortlessly cool guitar. Certainly, Larkins have achieved their aim in allowing their listeners to be ‘immersed in the atmosphere of the music’ (boysbygirls interview).

Larkins are set to embark on a 16 date headline tour in autumn, and I’d suggest grabbing tickets before the dreamy indie superstars sell out completely. Buy tickets here to experience the masterpiece that is ‘Wallflower’, live. See you there.
