The rumors that this is Nine Inch Nails's best album are greatly exaggerated. The good news is that Hesitation Marks is different from everything we're accustomed to expecting from Reznor. The element of surprise is the strongest trump of the disk and he played it amazingly well. The rising wave of abrasive noise and the voice acting in The Eater of Dreams sounds encouraging to Reznor fans of The Downward Spiral, but their joy is doomed to be short: the introductory piece is something like a sound counterpoint to everything is happening in the disc on. Reznor has explored the theme of despair and the loss of meaning from many angles. Copy of A is the quieter and serene version of Every Day Is Exactly The Same, in which anger has given way to a melancholy contemplation. Come Back Haunted pulls out of the wardrobe skeletons of the disco and owes its talentedly simplified beat to EBM legends such as Front 242. Find My Way is another example of clearing the sound of Nine Inch Nails from effects and noise decorations. Among the other peaks in the album are Disappointed with Beat from the Detroit House School and sounding like a burned-out vocal who does not keep up with the rhythm, and Satellite - a shocked portion of futuristic synthpop darkness in Gary Numan's best traditions and Fad Gadget
