Grapthar's Song of the Day: Big Sir 'Nonstop Drummer'
Big Sir - Nonstop Drummer
Big Sir is a musical project
from bassist Juan Alderete and Lisa Papineau. Juan Alderete is a majorly accomplished bassist; he formed Racer X with Paul Gilbert in the '80s, played with The Mars Volta for a number of albums, and has been a studio/touring musicians, playing with acts such as Marilyn Manson and Deltron 3030. Lisa Papineau has released quite a few solo albums, and performed with Omar Rodriguez Lopez, along with a number of other artists.

This song is from the group's
debut self-titled album, released in 2000. The album is an incredible mix of virtuosic bass parts, super groovy lo-fi hiphop, and some strange experimental guitar/synth work that is definitely reminiscent of some aspects of The Mars Volta. This song uses a fretless bass, which Alderete uses perfectly; he is definitely a player who can shred, but also is able to play an in-pocket, super groovy tune like this perfectly. Papineau's vocal melody/timbre works great here too, really rounding the song.
