'Encircling Modules' - Original Music! Electronic/Rock - Guitar Tune Mapped in Ableton + Walkthrough!
I have begun recording the actual
guitar version of this, which I'll probably finish after my vacation next week, but I figured it would be a good time to go back to this version, and then share the new one in the near future. I basically just used an electric piano here to take the place of the guitar, and an electric bass guitar (synth), with some simple drums. I haven't decided what to do about percussion in the final version, maybe some hand-drums of some kind, shakers, triangle, I dunno, but probably not an actual drum kit. However, for a basic map of the tune, this kit works fine.

The basic verse progression
which we begin the tune with, is playing major and minor 3rds, a 5th, and a minor 6 interval, but in spread voicing which is super easy to do on guitar (and often required), but has a different sort of feeling on a keyboard, but again, for a basic map of the ideas, piano works for now. We have Bmin, Cmaj, G/D, and F/A, which repeats 2x through.
Track 1, the chorus, described below.
Next up is the Chorus,
where we move officially in C major (I suppose the verse was too, but it’s a bit ambiguous). Here, we play a Cmajor, B/G# (essentially G#minor), A/F# (F#minor) to an Emajor. I thought this sounded super cool, using the G# and F# to give us a really interesting resolve to Emajor. I always sort of called this a pseudo-modulation, since we feel like although we start on Cmajor, we are actually resolving like we are in Emajor, but then everything goes back to Cmajor immediately after. Finally, we use a Bmin to Cmaj, then down to Fmajor. Finally, there is a Dminor, to a Gmaj (then the G slides up to a G# before repeating.

The ending of the song takes
the Chorus, and gets rid of the dissonances essentially, so we move Cmajor to Aminor, to G/A to the Emajor. Simple, but effective in changing things up just enough. I have attached a screenshot of the bass part (Track 2) below, which follows a lot of root notes, but does a bit of harmonizing throughout the tune.
Track 2, the bass.
Hope you’ve enjoyed the walkthrough! I’ll make sure to update as soon as I have the new version recorded and edited a bit!
