Grapthar's Song of the Day: Leo Kottke 'When Shrimps Learn to Whistle'
Leo Kottke - When Shrimps Learn to Whistle
Leo Kottke is an acoustic guitar musician
known for his unique fingerpicking style, combining TONS of influences, from blues and bluegrass, to classical and flamenco, and even country and world-music. He mostly does instrumental music, although occasionally he incorporates vocals into songs, and has been an active musician since 1966. His catalog is MASSIVE, and despite my best efforts, I still haven't heard all of his music; some is available on Spotify, some can be found online, but some of it is really difficult to get a digital copy of, which is kind of cool in today's world.
Listen to When Shrimps Learn to Whistle by Leo Kottke here.
This was one of the first
Kottke songs I heard and what got me hooked on him. The title alone is interesting and weird, and the song doesn't disappoint. The slide guitar mixed with the unique chord choices and voicings makes for a really cool tune. Despite having no vocals, the guitar handles the melodies really well and keeps things moving along. I love how this song feels sort of country/western while still maintaining a uniqueness and quirkiness that feels completely un-country. It's this dichotomy that makes his guitar playing so interesting in my opinion.
Hope you enjoy the song! Thanks for checking out my blog, and Steem On!
