Grapthar's Song of the Day: Mogwai 'Batcat'
Mogwai - Batcat
Mogwai is a post-rock band
from Scotland, formed in 1995. The band's current lineup consist of Stuart Braithwaite (guitar, vocals), Dominic Aitchison (bass), Barry Burns (guitar, keys, vocals) and Martin Bulloch (drums). They have released basically an album every year since they began, and have a number of EPs and singles, making their discography pretty massive. While they definitely began as a shoegazey/post-rock/wall-of-sound sort of band, over time they've expanded their sound and incorporated lots of ideas from other genres and styles.

This song is from their
2008 album The Hawk is Howling, and was also released as a single/EP with 2 other tracks. While it's hard for me to pick a favorite of theirs, this song is definitely up there. It has an awesome dark, driving bass part that is the bedrock of the harmony, and the guitar and drums work really well with it. This tune sort of reminds me of Frodus or Slint, it definitely is very distinct from their other music, and even the other songs on the album it first appeared on.
