Grapthar's Song of the Day: Paul Simon 'One Man's Ceiling is Another Man's Floor'
Paul Simon - One Man's Ceiling is Another Man's Floor
I was listening to Paul Simon
in the car today, and this track came on, so I figured it's a good choice for the song of the day. Simon began his career with songwriting partner Art Garfunkel in 1956, and they came to some serious mainstream success in the '60s. After their breakup in 1970, Simon went on to have a massively successful solo career, writing and performing all the way through today. He was able to reinvent himself on a number of occasions, releasing #1 hits through the '70s and well into the '80s.

This song comes from his
1973 album There Goes Rhymin' Simon. The song begins with some beautiful descending arpeggios, after which he hints at the bluesy/swing feeling that happens later in the tune with a little piano lick. The Verses and Choruses are super catchy, and yet still manage to use some really complex chordal ideas, as Simon was evolving his songwriting a lot at this point and coming up with some really great lines, melodies and harmonic concepts.
