The Slits - So Tough (Peel Session)

The Slits were a super interesting band

who were definitely an influential part of the burgeoning punk/post-punk scene of the late '70s in London. They were formed in 1976 by Ari Up, Palmolive, Kate Korus and Suzy Gutsy, though the latter 2 members were replaced by Viv Albertine and Tessa Pollitt. The band combined reggae ideas, with a minimalistic approach to their guitars, in addition to the more intense punk concepts, creating a really unique sound that was all their own.

Listen to So Tough by The Slits here.

This song is a great example

of their versatility. The original album version is SUPER sparse, and clearly reggae-oriented, but here they took the bassline and wrote a more distorted guitar line around that harmonic idea, in addition to completely altering the drums. There's a really cool pattern here in post-Chorus/verse, where we have a guitar line that repeats every 3 bars, while the vocals continue every 4, so the guitar feels like it shifts the downbeat underneath the melody.

Enjoy today's song! Thanks for checking out my blog, and Steem On!
