So this isn't a "real" song,

I was just messing around a few days and was trying to write something in 7/4, and wound up with this. I wasn't super stoked with the result, and kind of abandoned it, but I thought about it and figured it would be good to share a track like this; it's a good example of the fact that not every song turns out to be what you intended, which is a good learning experience. There is some cool stuff going on, definitely could use parts in other tracks, so let's go through it individually and see what's going on.

Listen to Numerator 7 here.

Track 1 is our drums which

are basically the same beat the whole time. I was going to change things up a bit, but since I sort of put this on the backburner, the drums stick to the same progression. Tracks 2 and 3 both play a single whole note of G each measure, #2 is the higher bell/beep sort of tone, while #3 is the strange synth noise that begins the song.

Track 4 is the weird, angular synth progression

and is the first instrument to play a melody in the song. You can see what it does above. This continues for most of the track, excluding the intro and outro. Track 5 is a Wurlitzer piano sound, and only plays a single chord every 4 bars: a C5 (with the G in the bass). Tracks 4 and 5 establish our key center in C minor, so Tracks 2 and 3 were actually playing the 5th all along.

Track 6 is just a little filler

for transitions, and swells up in volume. You can see in the overview that is used a few times throughout the track. Track 7 is the next major adddition to the harmony, playing whole notes of C, D, Eb and back to D before repeating. Track 8 is the spacey beepy things that come in after Track 7 plays through once. I have attached a screenshot of what I played below, as the actual sound of it has lots of other stuff going on.

Our final instrument is Track 9

which plays on the 1 and 3 of each measure, following the same notes as Track 7 (C, D, and Eb), but it's in a higher octave, and has quite a bit of delay on it. This is where I got kind of bored with this track, I had tried to keep things simple, but I just lost focus and interest after this Track, so for the time being, this tune is as it is.

Hope you have enjoyed the walkthrough and found it interesting! While this isn't a "great song", I like to share the failures too; it can be a great learning experience seeing how other musicians write music, and what works/what doesn't. Thanks for checking out my blog!
