Song of the Day - Nina Cried Power by Hozier

There is this urge when discussing Hozier to describe him as a bit of a one hit wonder seeing how his hit Take Me To Church rocketed into the popular consciousness in a way that few songs in the modern era could ever hope to. In a world of rather throwaway pop and trap though it’s a disservice to him as an artist. Take Me To Church had its hooks but it’s powerful message and voice was anything but throwaway. If anything it showed that there is a true desire for meaningful music that radio stubbornly is slow to get behind. This is an era of advertisements before artistry after all and his song was undeniable despite its dense and heavy subject matter.

So in the nearly 5 years that have passed I’ve been looking forward to what his future might have and I’m glad to say his follow up is really resonating with me. Tapping into the protest music of a long gone era, this song is powerful. That spirit of Nina Simone lives on in this.
