Lyrics Meaning #40 / Song of the Day: No Scrubs - TLC

We never knew what the term scrubs (except the literal one) until TLC came out with this upbeat R&B song. In fact, it became an inspiration to a song by Destiny's Child called Bills Bills Bills which I had written about recently.

TLC may have undergone hiatus and bankruptcy then, but fans helped out for them to release the album Fanmail, which the title was based from what their fans did, and this song helped to make the album highly successful.

At the start of the song, it was already explained or defined what a scrub means. It seems the guy is a loser, and despite his situation, he still has the nerve to make demands. For a girl, who will like such a guy?

The character is really determined to despise that kind of guy. He has nothing yet he wants the girl who doesn't want that kind of guy. The girl, though, is looking down at such guy who is just a passenger of his bestfriend's car, and that he doesn't own anything.

It seems the girl wants a guy who will not depend on her, and isn't broke. She wants a guy who can support her. She demands a guy who has his own car, and house. An independent guy probably is what the girl wants.

This song made the girls the top girl group at that time, when Spice Girls has gone hiatus following Geri Halliwell's departure. No Scrubs is a huge number 1 hit in America just a short while after it was released. It was a big number 3 hit in United Kingdom. It also earned a huge 118 million views on YouTube despite being released years before the said platform was created.
