People always say music has feeling. I am here to prove the formula.

Music, IN FACT, has feeling. You can describe feelings using music. They have done it all throughout the history of modern film. You can play sad music when something sad happens. You can create anticipation in a horror film when the victim is being chased. These types of feelings are created with music and you can learn how to build your music using feelings by following formulas.

As I was first learning music theory I quickly came across the concept of putting music into formula. For example, (Don't worry this article wont be a bunch of tech talk, this is just one example)The circle of fifths is a formula for learning all of your scales. It is quite complex if you have never seen it before, and even more complex if you do not know what you are looking at. Lets get into something that makes a little more sense.

Happy sound

When we think of happy in context of music, we think of something upbeat. Something with positive vibes that just makes us feel good. This is best used when your root chord is a major chord. Starting the song with something like Gmaj or Cmaj would help solidify.

Major chord
In music theory, a major chord (Play) is a chord that has a root, a major third, and a perfect fifth. When a chord has these three notes alone, it is called a major triad. Major triads with additional notes, such as the major seventh chord, are also called major chords.

You can get some really good results combining these chords to make things sound more positive and happy. The major chord progressions work well for this. If you are wanting to learn these chords on the guitar or another instrument, simply just look up the tags and read them. If you dont know how to read tabs, obviously go to Youtube and learn right now haha.

Sad sound

This kind of music mind be played during tragedy in a movie. Maybe your song describes someone close to you that has died and you want to represent how things made you feel. Sad is a strong emotion and the best way to describe this emotion using music is the minor chord.

Minor chord
In music theory, a minor chord (play D minor chord) is a chord having a root, a minor third, and a perfect fifth. When a chord has these three notes alone, it is called a minor triad. Some minor triads with additional notes, such as the minor seventh chord, may also be called minor chords.

You can pull out the violins and tissues for these chords. They are going to give you the best results when trying to create the sound for sadness. Give it a try and see if you can make yourself sad. Unless youre like me and you just think about your wallet.

Anticipated sound

The anticipated sound might be best described as being chased by a serial killer and falling down while hes 10 feet behind you as you struggle to get up. This would be best described using the diminished chords and scales. These chords are best played in groups. The more you combine them the more anticipated things get. The chord can also go into a a Major or Minor chord and they both have a sort of tension release in their own ways.

Intervals in a Diminished Chord. A diminished chord is built similarly to a minor chord, except for its fifth. It consists of the following intervals: Root: The note upon which a chord is based, no matter its inversion. F# is the root of F#dim; B is the root of Bdim, and so on..

The concept of the diminished chord is kind of tough to master, but once you start to play with them you will see how they move up the neck of the instrument in a repetative nature and they create a sort of anticipation sound. It can be an ugly chord but the resolve into Major or Minor chords sounds SOOO fucking good.

Spaced out sound

I always describe this one to my students in a certain manor. Imagine getting whacked on the head with a huge rock and waking up in 2139. That is what this one is described by. It is sort of a spacey confused sound. Where you are questioning what is going on. The augmented chord best describes how to make this feeling. If you are lost and cant find your way.. get augmented (cheesy)

In music, an augmented triad is a triad, or chord, consisting of two major thirds (an augmented fifth). The term augmented triad arises from an augmented triad being considered a major chord whose top note (fifth) is raised, or augmented. It can be represented by the integer notation

For those who are somewhat familiar with music theory, this is simply just a major chord where you sharp the fifth by a half step. It gives a "I dont know what the fuck is going on" kind of vibe.

Combing sounds

Now this is where it gets fun. You take everything you learned above and you start putting it together. This is when you find out that all human emotion can be described by music. WE as humans are connected to music on some deeper form. Musics formulas are much like those of humans. We have no end. Music will never be fully mastered for it is always evolving as does human. We will always have a relationship to music. A connection of feeling and involvement. It will make us smile, dance, laugh, cry, and scream. It will accompany us in our life.

I hope you learned something useful for your musical arsenal today. If you have any questions or want to discuss music or film or whateverrrrrr we can talk about it in the comments below. I would love to hear what your thoughts on turning music into feelings
