Mad Professor Deep Blue Delay- Clone made by Jose Vallera

in #music5 years ago

No creo.

English Version

Hello Hello friends, lovers of music and DIY, today I will talk about a project I had in mind for a while, and a few days ago I set out to develop it, and today with a lot of taste and humility I show you! , it is a delay unit in the pure Tape Delay style, that is, the typical Tape Delay (Echoplex and similar). There are two factors that made me go backwards in a tape delay. First, its huge size (come on, as if to integrate the pedal on the pedalboard!), The components are almost impossible to get in my country, (Venezuela) and buy it ?, or play after seeing its exorbitant price. Only the recreation of an authentic analog tape delay that Fulltone sells is already like having to sell a kidney, so imagine what an authentic Echoplex unit or similar should cost. So I got down to work and decided to look for some scheme to build and try to recreate that sound of the mentioned delay, in my search I opted for a digital one but with an analogous answer, but (the blessed "but"), the digital world delays is limited by the number of bits with which the signal is processed and the quality of the Analog / Digital and Digital / Analog converters. Outside of rack equipment, it's really hard to find digital delays that do not end up sounding too thin, sharp and, even too hi-fi and unmusical.

After hours and hours on the web, comparing different types of delays I inclined to the "Deep Blue Delay of Mad Professor", what I call my attention and the intriguing part of this team is that the Deep Blue is actually a digital pedal , although the direct signal path is analog. From what I have come to understand, is that the digital part corresponds to the circuitry that manages the repetitions, while the whole environment (before and after) would be analog. A very clean delay sound pedal, and with a few decays of very natural echoes, exactly what I was looking for, (in good time), The repetitions vanish in a very natural way. Something that is not always easy to find in the Delays, has no Tap Tempo, or any other way to establish a certain time, or dividers or subdivisors, nor all those usual things, nothing to do with the tons of different types of delay that offer digital equipment. :
  • "LEVEL", serves to control the direct effect / signal mix and the amount of delay effect, in my opinion you have to manage this control well so that the sound is not excessively pure but, at least it allows you to choose the exact amount of effect to your likingThe pedal Mad Professor's retardation originally has three controls: "LEVEL", "DELAY" and "REPEAT", BUT in the case of mine, an additional volume control. Now, let's see how each of them works.

  • "DELAY", offers a sweep of delay times from 25 milli-seconds to 450 milli-seconds

  • "REPEAT", this control of "MIX" is exactly what you imagine it is, and runs from a single regeneration to an infinite feedback, playing with these last two as we increase the control "Delay", and controlling well the "Repeat", The sensation that you get is to be in a live performance, where the sound of the stage is bouncing off the walls. At tempo ?, surely not and, that's why it sounds so naturall.

  • "VOLUMEN", put there to have a better control over the feedback loop, it also serves as a booster, and apart from that it gives a great life and body to the instrument.

One of the sales arguments offered by this brand, is that it works very well with distortions / overdrives either through the input or the effects loop of any amplifier. Does it ?. I assure you, yes! This is one of the typical problems that I have encountered, basically with analog, that saturate the sound, so that anyone would be lost in the mix, but this works as normal with distortions and overdrive, guaranteed!

Now, let's study this circuit a bit.

This delay equipment is based on the integrated circuit PT2399, and its power stage uses an operational amplifier OP275 or AD712, I told you about these last ones I tried several integrated ones including the OP275, TL072, Tl062. JRC4558, Jrc4559 and NE5532, I feel this last one that I liked most of all, in my opinion it gives more character to the sound. The day I made it sound for the first time the first thing that came to mind was, THIS IS ALIVE !, "Jose you have reached your destination!", This is simply what I was looking for, it is a pedal that does only one thing THE ONE I WANT! and it goes well. "Obviously, it has many more possibilities but, for the use I want it works perfectly well, as I had told you without tap tempo, without divisions, or other things..

Is it the best Delay?. I don `t believe. But, it is very good, and from today it is fixed on my pedalboard.
Here I leave a sample of how it sounds and if any of you are interested in this world with great pleasure I help them in everything that is within my reach.
