Celebrating NZ music throughout May: 17-20 - 1980s One Hit wonders / Revere

in #music6 years ago

I’m posting earlier than usual today as @andysantics48 and I are off to Brisbane this afternoon, with her daughter and grandson. You probably won’t see any sign of me for four days. So don’t be offended if I don’t reply to comments.

Today I want to feature a few fun songs from the 1980s that could come under the heading of one-hit wonders, or bands that were short lived and made only one album.

The Crocodiles

This band was a descendant of Blerta and you can see Bruno Lawrence in the first part of the video, and later playing drums, in this video of “Tears” from 1980

The Swingers

The Swingers were founded by Phil Judd, who was in Split Enz – see more about them here. They were active from 1979 to 1982 and released one album “Practical Jokers”. Their best known song from it was “Counting The Beat” from 1981.

Netherland Dancing Toys

These guys were a band from the University of Otago who formed in 1982. They had a well known single in 1985 called “For Today”. Don’t they look clean cut!

They disbanded shortly after that to go their own ways. One of the band was Annie Crummer, who went on to be well known in the music scene in her own right. More a little below...

Peking Man

Also from 1985 is “Room That Echoes” from Peking Man’s album “Peking Man”.

The lead vocalist was Margaret Urlich who was later involved with “When The Cat’s Away” with Annie Crummer.

When The Cat’s Away

An all female group which included Annie Crummer, Margaret UIrlich, Debbie Harwood and others. They mainly performed live, but here’s their cover of “Melting Pot” from their 1987 album.

Holiday Makers

Most known for “Sweet Lovers”, their 1988 remake of a Bill Withers song.
