Hi guys, welcome to my music corner. Today I'll shed a little light on some music terms. See you after the class.

Music can be played in very many ways, sometimes it’s very fast or sleepily slow, loud or soft, the musical notes can be short or long too. If you want to play and enjoy music, you need to know how to read this information. Musical terms are mostly written in Italian. Beginning in the late 1500’s, there were a lot of people making music in Italy, so most of our early music composers are Italian and the instructions and guides to play their music was written in Italian.

Musical terms are grouped into three:

- Tempo : This tells you how fast or slow to go

- Dynamics: This tells you how loud or soft to play

- Articulations: This tells you how long or short a note is

TEMPO

Tempo is an Italian word that comes from the word tempus, which means time. In order to understand tempo we use the metronome to know exactly how may beats per minute each tempo is.

Different tempo an their beats per minute

  • Largo 40-60
  • Larghetto 60-66
  • Adagio 66-76
  • Andante 76-108
  • Moderato 108-120
  • Allegro 120-168
  • Presto 168-200
  • Prestissimo 200-208

Dynamics

This simply shows us how loud or soft to play. Two important words to remember for dynamics are:

  • Piano = soft or quiet
  • Forte = loud

Different Dynamic Markings and their meanings

  • piannissimo - very quiet
  • piano - quiet
  • mezzo piano - medium quiet
  • mezzo forte - medium loud
  • forte - loud
  • fortissimo - very loud

We also have two other types of Dynamics that are commonly used. They are:

  • Crescendo (Kra-SHEN-doe) : This tells you to grow gradually louder

  • Decrescendo (DEE-kra-SHEN-doe): This tells you to grow gradually softer

Articulations

Articulations is just a fancy way of saying “note length.” Articulations are shown by symbols which appear either above or below the note head.

TIES AND SLURS

A tie is a curved line connecting two or more notes of the same pitch.
A slur is a curved line connecting two or more notes of different pitches.

So here is where I'll stop for tonight.... See you next time guys
