5 of the greatest songs...ever

in #music5 years ago (edited)

Music. We can slice it and dice it. Dissect it, pull it apart like pulled pork. Label it, ignore it, and love it.

It comes and goes like gusts of wind. It matters, it doesn't. It's creative, it's not. It evolves. It continues to evolve.

I'm sure you've heard someone, somewhere, state this at some point in your life:

The Beatles are the most influential band of all time

Perhaps I should have typed that statement alternating the letters back and forth between uppercase and lowercase because, well, if you rolled your eyes you wouldn't be the only one (and obviously if you agreed, you definitely wouldn't be the only one either).

But that's a topic for someone else to mull over because it's simply not really something I let take space in the confines of my head - and I mean that in nothing more than in a neutral manner. It silently demands answering, though...

What makes some...thing...influential? What makes some...thing...the "best". Obviously, there are a million...things...that make that one...thing...in life...great. But I can't tell you what that is because, well, I just don't know.

It happens fluidly and it can't be explained. It's akin to a genuine moment transpiring without friction within your life. It's like taking a walk on a perfectly-weathered 76° degree day and stumbling across an unanticipated rainbow in the sky, laying out as if it owned that 1,000+ feet of distance.

Even so, something like music, - it's almost impossible to just say that any one, singular, song is the greatest of all time.

This is especially true when (I'm only guessing here) more than a billion songs have ever exited the mind of someone as a thought and gone onto be developed into a real-life full-length song.

I think of ancestors, our founders, whistling a tune to themselves in a canoe as they cross a river. I think of the times of (I'm no expert on this...genre...if you will) Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach. I think of soldiers lined up ready for battle humming a tune to calm their nerves before impending war. Of buskers, thinkers, talents, the bored, and musically-minded.

A song begins in so many places, it finishes in even more. And so, it's beyond unfair to ever say...this...or that...or those...is/are..."the greatest song(s) ever". Making a statement like that for the Beatles, for anyone, or any song...is just downright rude. It's something I can't say - so I won't do it.

What I do want to do is give you a few songs that, while not the greatest...ever, are...some of the greatest...ever. I'm not asking you to take what I'm placing directly into the palm of your hand and cram it deep down into the pockets of the sides of your pants where that last bit of lint lies from this morning's laundry. No. These are only suggestions. Thus, here are 5 of the greatest songs..."ever".

Will definitely give them a listen, I think what makes songs really great is how they relate and link to moments so we will find many "greatest songs" ever ... @geekdancing will agree with me :)

Absolutely. One thing I've found myself doing at times is following a rule of not googling song lyrics to a song I'm digging because I'm afraid the lyrics won't quite match what I'm feeling when I hear the song

Definitely love that #1 song on your list, and recognise #2, the rest - I seem to have missed.

In any case, will have to give these a listen on a playlist soon.

Glad you were able to get some time for a quick read, miss. #1 is timeless, for sure. I think you may like #4, but I'm not sure because I'm still getting to know you
