“The Girl from Ipanema” by Astrud Gilberto / Stan Getz – SteemitCentral Lyrics Challenge – Day 59 / 60

“When she walks, she's like a samba that swings so cool and sways so gently”

song ~ “The Girl from Ipanema”
artist ~ Astrud Gilberto / Stan Getz

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes
Each one she passes goes "Ahhh!"

When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gently
That when she passes
Each one she passes goes "Ahhh!"

Oh, but he watches her so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her?
Yes, he would give his heart gladly

But each day when she walks to the sea,
She looks straight ahead, not at he

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes
He smiles, but she doesn't see

[Instrumental]

Oh, but he watches her so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her?
Yes, he would give his heart gladly

But each day when she walks to the sea,
She looks straight ahead, not at he

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes
He smiles, but she doesn't see

She just doesn't see
No, she doesn't see
She just doesn't see     (Image source)

In the mid-1960s, the jazz / bossa nova song “The Girl From Ipanema”  became one of the most popular jazz songs ever.  According to some statistics, it is the second-most-recorded song in history, behind only The Beatles’ song “Yesterday.”  This version by Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto became an international hit in 1964.

Beauty and Melancholy

The lyrics were inspired by an actual Brazilian girl (known as Helô Pinheiro) who used to walk past the Ipanema café where the composers (Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes) were relaxing. The lyricist Moraes recalled that Helô was “a golden teenage girl,”  who personifies “a gift of life in its beautiful and melancholic constant ebb and flow.”

Beauty Wins

The song has been the subject of various legal disputes. The main one was in 2001, when Pinheiro opened a boutique and named it after the Portuguese title of the song (Garota de Ipanema ). The families of the composers sued her, stating that since they held the copyright, Pinheiro did not have the right to use the phrase for commercial purposes. However, the court ruled in her favor.

Super! Yes, the lyrics were written by Vinicius de Moraes and Helô Pinheiro is a real Brazilian girl... Some people believe that there are 170 versions for the song and even Amy Winehouse sing it!

Yes, I confirmed my research, but then added Jobim as a "songwriter," since it was essentially a collaboration between the Moraes and Jobim.

Since this is your first comment on Steemit, I gave it a 100% upvote!! But don't expect to get such big upvotes all the time, and don't expect to get such upvotes from everybody.

p.s. I checked out your blog home page, and, since I'm an EDITOR, I noticed that you had misspelled "beauty." Please correct it. :-)
