BATTLES - Mirrored (2007)

in #music6 years ago

Okay, we're really switching it up for this one. I hope you'll come along for the ride. Battles sound more like electronic music, but they look like a rock band. The drummer for Battles, John Stanier, was the drummer in the alternative metal band Helmet when they were popular in the 90s, for instance. There are plenty of guitars, bass, and drums.

But they weave in and out of amazing loops, blips, keys, and noises. There are some vocals, but they are sparse, and often effected to an extent that they sound like another noise in the song, and not the melody or focus.

Because I'm not one of them writer types, here's a snippet from the review this album got in Pitchfork upon its release which I feel does a far better job at encapsulating the overall vibe of the record in a couple sentences.

The album's (a) mix of over-the-top whimsy, extreme analog rhythms that are often as much jazz-fusion as IDM as tech-metal, vocals that would do Roger Troutman proud, and vise-tight, "live or laptop?" musicianship connected as much by USB ports and Firewire cables as the improvisatory interplay of four dudes just jamming.
