I have been in a very Beckian mood lately, partially because I think he’s an incredibly talent individual, and partially because he is obviously a HOLY FOOL in his own right. (I’m going to go ahead and DECLARE him a HOLY FOOL in the Order of Primitives right now. The ACT of declaring something, as philosophers like John Searle have discussed, is a form of verbal magic. Before the preacher or judge says, “I now declare you ‘man and wife’ (or ‘wife and wife’ or whatever you’re into,) that’s just two people living separate lives. AFTER the statement is uttered, something has HAPPENED, and the two become a single, unified LIFE. Magic. When you sign your name on the contract: BAM! Something happens. The act, the signing, the saying, these things CAUSE a change in the reality that we live in. I DECLARE that BECK HANSON is a HOLY FOOL---and therefore, he is now a Holy Fool in our PHILOSOPHICAL FRAMEWORK. (You’re welcome, Mr. Hanson---in about three different senses of the phrase…)

Anyway, I’ve been in a serious Beck mood lately, enjoying songs like “Devil’s Haircut,” “Loser,” “Fume,” “Mixed Bizness,” “Hell Yes,” and a dozen others… His tunes are groovy and fun and challenging and hilarious! (Especially “Fume,” which MIGHT be my favorite song he’s ever done… That one or “Satan Gave Me a Taco,” maybe… But, because my rules are that I can only put one song per performer (or group) per playlist, I had to narrow down my Beck selections to just ONE cut. Tough… Really tough… I went with “Wow.” It’s dreamy and funny and has a wicked rhythm---even though it’s about a half time beat, maybe a half chill / half psychic travel tune…

Again, the purpose for this playlist is for ME to have fun. I AM an aging hipster (even though I was never a proper hipster---I’m about five years too old for that category. I’m a late-era Waver. I had a colorful, UP-IN-THE-AIR hairstyle in the late ‘80s, similar to my New Wave heroes, like Robert Smith (from The Cure, obviously) and Ian McCulloch (from Echo and The Bunnymen,) and even though I hung out mostly with skater-punks in high school, I preferred OMD and Siouxsie and The Banshees and Depeche Mode to Black Flag (especially the Henry Rollins version) or the Dead Kennedys. (I like Jello Biafra as a person, and I have several of his spoken word albums, but I don’t own a single DK record or CD.) I don’t know what any of this is supposed to mean to you people, other than to say that I’m old---and this is the music that I like. At one time, much of this music was considered “cutting edge,” although I think most of it would be “oldies,” now. It’s not my fault that time passes, and things change, but still…. I like what I like, and I’m sharing it with you!

Here are 100 songs that at least one old guy likes (and, no, it’s not all old…):

This is some seriously fun tunage, but it’s probably not for everybody. (Technically, it’s mostly for ME.) If there are a few names on here that you’ve never heard before, give them a listen on YooToob. Might be something fun that you’re missing out on! Regardless, STAY HAPPY (or be DESTROYED!) HOORAY!!!!
