The brand new upcoming instrumental album ‘Conversaciones’ by Spanish classically trained violinist Pablo Rodríguez and Cuban pianist Humberto Ríos, whose live performance has already been described ‘A true emotional spectacle’ is not just exploring jazz and classical sounds through the folk of Cuba and the Canary Islands, this album takes you on a journey you didn’t even know you desperately needed! It is rare that a duo will outperform an entire band, dare I say an entire orchestra, but the creativity of Rodríguez and Ríos knows no boundaries! In rare cases like this one less really is more!

I urge you to watch and listen to an incredible live performance of the first song on the album, Transoceánica, right now:

It comes as no surprise that the duo successfully covered the recording costs of the album by doing a crowdfunding campaign on Ulule: https://www.ulule.com/conversaciones/ and because of that the album was recorded at the "Fattoria Musica" studios, in Osnabrück, Germany. This is not just any recording studio, the is a residential music production facility located on a beautiful old farm house from 1878 surrounded by nature and inspiring calmness, as well as outstanding musical performances!

What makes this album and duo unique is not only the incredibly high standard of diversity when it comes to jazz, classical elements and folk, but you can almost hear Rodríguez and Ríos having fun playing these beautiful melodies. At times the violin is even used as a guitar, a technique that has to be seen (as well as heard) to be believed:

Each piece on this album is more like a painting that you would have to stare at for hours and hours in order to really understand how much thought has gone into it. It is rare that I, as a music blogger, say that I have never heard something like this in all my years of listening to a wide range of genres, but this album is truly outstanding. Each song really deserves its own article and even then the depth might not be described in a manner that does the music justice.

It would be extremely difficult to pick just one favourite piece of music on this album, however every time the violin is used as a guitar, such as in the song ‘Travesía Hacia El Atardecer’, for example, is a pleasure to listen to and it can only be recommended to be listened to in great detail, especially if you happen to be a guitar player. The piano performance in ‘Primavera’, ‘Danza De Los Tomates’, the drum performance on ’Nuevos Aires’ by Ruven Ruppik and the bass clarinet performance by Holger Werner are all fantastic as well!

It becomes obvious that both musicians has been playing their instruments since early childhood, but what’s really unique is that both artists have something that just can’t be taught; both artists have a ‘feel’ for playing exactly the right notes at exactly the right time. Usually albums feature some songs, or at least parts of songs that can only be described as ‘fillers’, songs that have only been written for the sake of making an album, to fill the gaps and make the record a certain length, however on this album there is no such thing! Not only that, the entire album is not only filled with one flawless violin and piano performance after another (among other instruments, at times), it is also mixed and mastered to perfection. So all in all I can only recommend you listen to this album once it gets released on the 10 of October, available through mainstreaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Pandora, among others. Physical copies will be available through the website as well.
