MUSIC: Festival Season is starting again
While it was a great weekend in Holland, where the temperature broke some records again, I was thinking about the upcoming festivals. The summer is always full of music and cultural festivals in Holland but of course also in other countries.
This year I am only attending the "Zwarte Cross", this is a cultural music festival in the eastern part of the Netherlands. It is one of the biggest festivals in Europe and it is really awesome to be there. The have a great mix of music and cultural stuff and are on of a kind with the atmosphere.
This year on main stage the black eyed peas are closing on the friday night on main stage

Although I don't think they are really a "Festival band" it will be great to see them live once.. To bad Fergy isn't with them anymore ;)
In the past years there are some bands who really surprised me on a festival or bands that I really think they are in their strenth on a festival..
Nothing but Thieves
Last year they were at PinkPop, Hollands oldest festival, and they really surprised me with their live performance.. It was awesome..

Before PinkPop (2011) I never had heard of Hurts before, I think they are a bit Depeche Mode kind of band with more popular influence. Great act and great music...

This performance of Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) was brilliant. He played a solo gig in a container for just a few people. Would have been awesome to have been there.

Festivals! Yay! Down to two outdoor festivals this year as one has been cancelled.
Not heard of Hurts or Nothing But Thieves, so will check 'em out.
Wouldn't mind seeing Eric Church - country being the new rock & all that.
Mano Negra. 199-something at Glastonbury Festival. They were astonishing - songs in 5 languages and music from skiffle to punk to disco. Lasted a few more years then collapsed during an ill-advised South American tour. Now Manu Chao just bounces around the stage blowing a whistle.
I saw String Cheese Incident at Glastonbury , way back when. They're a jam band based around bluegrass and country. They were so good that I went to see them the next day when they did a 3-hour set in one of the distant fields. Really don't like the the records though.
I'm currently listening to the new Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican CD (they only have 6 songs on Spotify). It's good, and funny, but you need to see them at a festival, when they are chuffing fantastic!
Dance music is better live than on record - just generally, but I only ever encounter it at festivals.
Levellers, Police Dog Hogan, Mad Dog Mcrae & Dropkick Murphys all give a bit of folk-punk wallop to a sunny afternoon!
It's also fun to see goth and death metal bands in daylight - I'm waiting for one to burst into flames or melt when the sun hits them.
Afro Celt Sound System were gob-smacking at Cropredy last year, but seem to have vanished again.
And if anyone gets a chance to see Ifriqiyya Électrique, let me know if they're good 'cos the new album is awesome

I think that the peas are a great festival band they can get the public moving and jumping around. And no Fergy is not a bad thing I think.

I think Eric Church is an artist that I enjoy listening to, but he was just fantastic when you see him live. It is a totally different show. There is a lot more energy in his songs. Besides that the other band I would have to say is awesome live is Phish. That is just a whole different experience that you have to say you did at least once.

Phish I don't know, but I will have a listen in a few minutes when I am driving home :)
Yes, we just saw him this past Spring. Phish is fantastic. They are a jam band and they just have some really great songs. If you can listen to one of their live albums. If you can't Farmhouse is a fantastic album to start with.
I listened to Farmhouse indeed on my way back yesterday. It's easy listening, never hearded of them before but the do sound awesome.
