One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. night club on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. He was soon surrounded by a pair of pulchritudinous, vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the topic of marriage arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal gets married she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. Those terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed” (a cover), and “something blue” (a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

Something old

Something old this time is “Stairway to Heaven” by the Brit band Led Zeppelin. Plant once said: “This is a song of hope.” It was written by guitarist Jimmy Page and singer Robert Plant. It was first released on their 1971 untitled fourth studio album referred to by some as Led Zeppelin IV.

Something new

Our “something new” this time is from 17-year-old singer-songwriter/musician Lola Bates. Here is her new, debut single “Red Hot.” It’s off her upcoming premiere platter Red Hot.
The official music video will debut on February 12. She has previously recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios, provided backup vocals for Marilyn Manson, played bass for David Hasselhoff and performed on the official soundtracks for Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2. The song “Red Hot” marks the start of her career as a solo artist.

Something borrowed

Our “something borrowed” is a cover of the 1967 song “Red House.” It was written by the late singer-songwriter and musician Jimi Hendrix. This particular version is played by the burgeoning American group known as the Chase Walker Band. It’s off their 2016 disc titled Not Quite Legal.

Something blue

The “something blue” this time is “Crazy Blues” by Mamie Smith and Her Jazz Hounds. It was written by Perry Bradford and released in 1920 by Okeh Records. It sold 75,000 copies in its first month. It was later used in episode 10 of the first season of the TV show "Boardwalk Empire".
