Versa est in Luctum | Alfonso Lobo

in #music5 years ago (edited)

Greetings Steemians! Today I will share with you another perfect Renaissance classic to be heard in this time of Lent. It is the six-piece arrangement by the Spanish composer Alfonso Lobo, entitled "Versa est in Luctum". As you read, you can go listening to the video link below:

Versa est in Luctum / Carlos Mena

Although less known than his contemporary Tomas Luis de Victoria, this musician is also one of the most renowned of the Renaissance period of music, thanks to his impressive and innovative contributions to polyphony.

The versa is a motet that was used for liturgy on funeral occasions, especially in Spain, where the tradition of lament was directly related to music. Other composers who contributed their work to this poem were Sebastian Vivanco and Francisco Peñalosa.

In the first video link we can see an impeccable solo version of the Spanish countertenor Carlos Mena accompanied by a vihuela in the year 2017 in the Church of the Encarnación Monastery for the XVII International Festival of Sacred Art of the Community of Madrid. Here is the six-voice version:

Versa est in Luctum / Coro Victoria

Versa est in luctum cithara mea,
et organum meum in vocem flentium:
Parce mihi, Domine, nihil enim sunt dies mei.
Cutis mea denigrata est super me,
et ossa mea aruerunt.

In this second version we listen to the Victoria Choir, directed by Ana Fernández Vega in 2017 at the San Francisco Auditorium in Ávila, Spain, as part of her tour dedicated to Alfonso Lobo in commemoration of the 400 years since his death.

I can only say goodbye by thanking your visit for this musical post dedicated to the music of the Lenten season, and finally adding the translation of the poem Versa est in Luctum, which is still very popular today especially in this period of year. Until the next post!
