Song Of The Golden Dragon

in #music5 years ago (edited)

If the Golden Dragon is used as a metaphor for a uniquely brilliant and creative mind, than the late Freddy Mercury was a Golden Dragon indeed. From his mind sprang the song that in wide circles is regarded as one of the best, or maybe even the best song ever written.

I'm talking, of course, about the lyrical and musical extravaganza that is Bohemian Rhapsody by the British rock band Queen. This song is the brainchild of the band's lead singer who has worked on it for years before it's release in 1975. I think this song has been reviewed and praised more than any other song, and that's including the great classical compositions. Let me take you through some of the development process:

According to Mercury's friend Chris Smith (a keyboard player in Smile), Mercury first started developing "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the late 1960s; Mercury used to play parts of songs he was writing at the piano, and one of his pieces, known simply as "The Cowboy Song", contained lyrics that ended up in the completed version produced years later, in 1975, specifically, "Mama ... just killed a man." Producer Roy Thomas Baker, who began working with Queen in 1972, related how Mercury once played the opening ballad section on the piano for him in Mercury's flat: "He played the beginning on the piano, then stopped and said, 'And this is where the opera section comes in!' Then we went out to eat dinner." Guitarist Brian May says the band thought that Mercury's blueprint for the song was "intriguing and original, and worthy of work". According to May, much of Queen's material was written in the studio, but this song "was all in Freddie's mind" before they started. In an interview during the band's Australian tour early in 1985, Mercury said, "It was basically three songs that I wanted to put out and I just put the three together."

Before recording started, the band had to rehearse for three weeks, and recording took at least 5 different studios; as an interesting side-note, Mercury used the same piano Paul McCartney had used to record Hey Jude, another song found in many top tens of all time, alongside Stairway to Heaven and Smells Like Teen Spirit.

What is it about music that makes it such a powerful means of communicating ideas and emotions? Why can't we be helped to get caught by the mysterious force that compels us to tap our feet, nod our heads, burst out in joyful dancing or unstoppable tears, and makes us use the "repeat" function whenever available because we just don't want it to stop? That's an interesting question for another time, another post maybe, but for now I'd just like to share with you the power of music, how the Golden Dragons wield power over us and manage to bring us together, with others or with ourself, or drive us apart by uniting us in tribes with their own musical messages like fight-songs or victory-chants. Whatever the source of the power of the Golden Dragon may be, it's almost sure to be found in the far away lands of prehistorical times where it took root in the early psychological evolution of mankind.

I believe Mercury was one of those souls in touch with that ancient part deep inside that invokes a state of "flow", a state wherein the self is temporarily lost and becomes one with the object of creativity. The part that communicates on a primitive, hormonal level and therefore talks in emotions rather than just words, and that his music communicates to us on the same level, making us defenseless against it's compelling power. Another great example of this, another personal favorite of mine, is Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra; I've always wondered why this song isn't in any of the popular top tens, as I can't help getting a smile om my face every time I hear it, and I was delighted to hear it screaming out of the speakers at the cinema when I went to see Guardians of the Glaxy Vol. 2...

There are many Golden Dragons though, not the least of which is the artist that played the song "The Golden Dragon" in front of an unsuspecting audience in the Bavarian town Landshut during a street festival in 2011; the largely unknown Russian guitarist Estas Tonne. On Steemit, and especially in the wonderful collection of souls united in @helpie, there are many Golden Dragons, Tonnes and Mercuries; they all possess that magical musical wand that unites them with their instrument of choice, unites us with their musical creations and each other, while we let them play our emotional strings. It's a great talent to have and a worthy skill to develop, one that's sure to be of value to all that come in touch with it.

Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the musical greats, no doubt, but in the end there's no objective way to determine what "the best" song ever is; it's down to personal taste for a large degree, as all art speaks to us on a deeply personal and emotional level. I've chosen this brilliant song by Estas Tonne to close with for a couple of reasons, one of them being that he reminds me of the musicians I've come to know and respect on Steemit, particularly within @helpie (it seems they all play the guitar :-)), and also because he's in such a beautiful flow... He talks to his guitar, it talks back to him and together they hold sway over a helplessly captured audience, like I'm captured when I listen to it... Communication is our strongest tool, emotions are our strongest motivators; I dedicate this post to all Golden Dragons out there, and say thank you, dear Dragons, for enriching our lifes with your magic...

Indeed it is. Music is balm like inspiration for our feelings and express what one often does not understand oneself to do. Recently I have registered for singing lessons, because I realize that this part of my life has atrophied too much. I would like to imitate those you call golden dragons, although I won't reach their level anymore because I lack specialization. But songs and dance are group experiences that we often don't really experience, only passively consume, so we seem to need so much of it. I used to go dancing when I was younger. It was pure joy and the music, when it reached me, carried me to fantastic heights. I just wish that afterwards one would have developed a greater sense of community. Something that would have given more meaning to the whole. But who knows what I took with me without knowing it? We didn't ask for meaning then, we wallowed in the experience itself.

Beautiful how you built your article. Queen is certainly one of the best bands and Bohemian Raphsody also carried me away. I found this triad in one piece irritating, it was immediately obvious that there was an unusual composition going on. It was similar with the film Pulp Fiction, which irritated the cinema-goers so much, yes, even annoyed me at the beginning, because I couldn't follow the plot right away. Also the play with exaggerated bloodbathing repelled and fascinated me as well as the apparent ease with which the brutality of the stories was served. From the usual horror movies a very well done change and reorientation.

Thank you very much for this fine contribution and for taking me to the realm of music.
