Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

Widely considered the pinnacle of Davis' musical career, the greatest jazz album and even one of the best albums of the whole 20th century, Kind of Blue is the kind of album even those unfamiliar with jazz music will own. A true improvised masterpiece of an unparalleled nature, rated quadruple platinum by the RIAA. The album was recorded over two days by Davis and his ensemble sextet consisting of saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb, with former band pianist Bill Evans appearing on most of the tracks in place of Kelly.
This album was a departure for Davis from his usual hard bop style of jazz, as he based the album entirely on modality, along with its predecessor Milestones. Modal jazz is seen as a way to improve improvisation, by moving away from the fixed chord sequences, and with Kind of Blue he was able to really push the boundaries.
The influence this album has had over so many genres of music, from classical to rock, cannot be exaggerated. Even my beloved Pink Floyd attribute this important album as a source of inspiration, with keyboardist Richard Wright saying that the chord progressions on the album influenced the structure of the introductory chords to the song "Breathe" on the album The Dark Side of the Moon.

Thanks for the reminder on this one! Havent listened to it in a long time but its such a great album. Been cranking some jazz in the last month or so
I treated myself to the legacy edition the other week, so my old copy got moved to the car and I've just had it on repeat ever since. I got really into Miles Davis when I was a teenager, also Wynton Marsalis if you've ever heard of him. I definitely need more jazz in my life.
