WAYBACK MUSIC CHALLENGE #5 - Riding thru Space

Steve Miller is one of those dudes who made his own way. He was in San Francisco in the late 60s when all of those other bands were there. He was from, mainly Texas, where his father hung around musical artists. He formed the Steve Miller Blues Band in 1966 and invited Boz Scaggs, a high school band mate to join, Which he did for Steve's first two albums. This song, Space Cowboy, was on his third album, Brave New World. He always worked as his own agent and signed an initial large contract with Capital Records. He had a blues/political/psychedelic/social vibe going. While in San Francisco during this time, he never seemed to be part of "the scene."
Space Cowboy is a song I played over and over. The basic flow of the song is that rhythm and blues and rock and roll flow that I really like. I've never thought of him as a great guitarist, but I usually like his taste - the way he put his stuff together.
The lyrics of this song are very interesting: pretty much anti-everyone else. Fascinating for the time. But the concept of a "space cowboy" riding thru space on this rock, has this poetic feel to me.

Steve went in and out of some interesting phases looking for his ... thing. He found it in "The Joker" album and made shits loads of money. Too much pop for me, so I hang with his first seven albums. As usual for good musicians, their entire albums are generally worth listening to and I have many more "fan favorite" songs based in those.
Now I can't help but add this tune for you. "Living In the USA" off of Sailor, his second album. This one made it to the radio and again, had obvious social commentary. ..now...Give me a cheeseburger!

This was his first album I bought - no ida about his music, but I loved the cover. Live in '71, after the harmonica intro he thru the harmonica into the audience. :-))
