What type of answers do you like the most on your questions on musing, the "amateur opinionated ones" or the "well documented from google ones"? Do you upvote the answers you like?

I think a bit of a mix is best, and the constituency of that mix will depend on the question. Neither of the above options on their own produces a particularly good answer in my opinion.

I think that the best answers have a mix of:

  • Responder's own expertise: It's generally pretty easy to separate 'google' factual answers from those written with a genuine understanding of the subject. The latter bring much more value than the former. It's OK to have some backing info from the internet but there should be some detail that wraps around this info to make it a unique and interesting answer that cannot be found elsewhere.
  • Well-constructed ideas and views: "Amateur opinionated" answers are often genuinely interesting in that they have lots of the responder's own ideas and views. This makes them thought-provoking. But they are better when those views are clearly thought-out and have a clear line of argument. If they can be backed by some facts rather than purely anecdotal then this adds to the weight of argument and makes them more convincing. And in the end a convincing opinion has more resonance than an unconvincing one.

Answers to "Factual questions" will need more of the former, with perhaps a smattering of the latter. Answers to "Idea questions" will require more of the latter but some of the former makes them more convincing.

I tend to upvote the questions I like if I'm responding to questions, and the answers I like to the questions I ask!
