The Funniest People on Earth are the Saddest

The smokes passed through and out of the pipe in a chain of twists, wriggling like a dancer on strip pole till they made it to the open air, the open world. Their captor, Groucho Marx adjusted himself, held the pipe for moment, away from his mouth, made an attempt to counter his host cum opponent, thought better of it then went back to kissing the tobacco of death. More puff and puff.

Groucho Marx

The host, William Buckley Jnr was having a swell time firing him with questions, mostly inconsistencies found in Groucho's later books. Marx remained resolute. He maintained a change of perspective wasn't as evil as William painted it and of course, for the most part he used humor to wriggle himself out of the tight corners.

Until he blurted out: "I am essentially a very sad man."

The dance between sarcasm and sadness is as old as history itself. The major talking point rests on the premise that talent and sadness are inseparable. The stats – yeah I am lazy as fuck to draw up the exact numbers – are they for all to see.

If you want exact numbers that much, look around you and tell if it isn’t the most talented folks among your peers that are the moodiest.

Hence, this one is inescapable from biology. But that is where the case of men who live a life of making others laugh get more interesting. It is like the specialist doctor that is doomed to die of the disease he dedicated his whole life treating other people from. Some Martyr perhaps?

From Groucho Marx to Neil Patrick Haris, reports of depression have being documented as the strain of loneliness continues to torch up they who give their life to make other people feel less lonely.

Thing is, the fact that someone is funny does not mean he is funny when he is having dinner or taking a shit or about to lie down or something. Funny people are still human beings and the basic longings of an average human being trails them whether they want to admit it or not.

Funny people are funny when they are thinking up some things that do not add up in the lives of the people in front of them or when they take up an audience and tell it to their face. Problem is people hardly imagine them in any other light than clowning around. Every time they sound "normal," they lose their comedic appeal and one way or the other may end up frustrated that people only want to hear them out when they feel like laughing. Not to connect. Not to reach out. Their job in this world is to make others laugh while nobody looks out for them.

It is essentially a very sad life.

There's a kind of peripheral thing with physicians also like this. I remember seeing a book titled "Physician, Heal Thyself!"
I think people in a position of caregiver, and comedian could be considered that to a degree, have a difficult time with just being themselves. Robin Williams comes to mind too.

Honestly, when it comes to this, history is always repeating itself, thereby making creative people more helpless. Like they cant escape it.

I don't know what you are talking about. I am perfectly funny every time I take a shit. Every time.

pardon Monsieur. I forgot you usually perch on the toilet seat and sing Cardi B songs throughout.

this makes me so sad...i don't have a cigar or a stripper pole...i guess I'll have to lick the ashtray and dance on the vacuum

i could join you. that's if you are comfortable with me being completely nude.
