FungiFriday: Slime moulds

Well I think this is a myxomycetes or Slime mould, usually they are slimier but slime moulds are even found in the Namibian desert so maybe they aren't all slimy. This one was under the bark of the decaying tree stump at my house. Strictly speaking, Myxomycetes aren't really fungi either, they are fungi-like organisms that share characteristics of both plants and animals. They feed on bacteria and fungi found on decaying plant material, and have an important role in recycling through the process of decay in a natural environment.

Ohhh slime! That's what we were missing on Fridays :D

But of course!

Amazing that simple organisms can be so powerful and essential to a healthy ecology and living conditions on earth! We are really interdependent even on a tiny scale.

I had to search myxomycetes wondering if they were the same as lichen...... What a fascinating subject, part protozoa part fungi 😮

Yes, there are all sorts of weird creatures at microscopic level and the more ability we have to see, the more we get to understand that the distinction between plants and animals is fairly blurred
