ScholarsPH Blog #1: Our First Scholar, Myke

in #myfundition6 years ago (edited)

@scholarsph aims to uplift the Philippine community through education - one youth at a time. The group will support tertiary-level or collegiate students by providing funds for their school fees and allowance.

Get to know how the program started by reading our introductory post.

The Founding Team

The project is founded by a group of authors at @tagalogtrail's discord server, and helmed by the three main curators of the group. @chinitacharmer will be our key person in facilitating updates and funds application. She's the primary teacher and adviser of the first chosen beneficiary and has been teaching in Tagum National Trade School for over two years, with 10 years' professional experience in the education sector.

Meet Myke, Our First Scholar

Name: Myke Isidore A. Tabugoc
Nickname: Myke
Course: Hotel and Restaurant Servicing major in Food Processing
School Year: 2018-2019
Address: Davao del Norte City, Philippines
Birthday: May 20, 1993
Age: 25

Myke is both deaf and mute

Aside from the challenges he faces in learning and communication gap among peers and teachers, he and his family also struggles financially. His mother has passed away and his father works hard as a vendor to make ends meet. Despite the difficult circumstances, he has demonstrated an earnest drive to learn and leverage his practical skills for a stable and rewarding career in the future.

For all the reasons above, we felt he is the perfect first beneficiary among the group of differently-abled learners in Tagum's Trade School.

An Overview of the Trade Program

Hotel and Restaurant Servicing program enables each student to learn cookery skills and several other academic subjects. The differently-abled students learn alongside regular students. And their teachers who do not have any background in sign language are assisted by "shadow teachers" (sign language interpreters).

Funding Allocation

@scholarsph plans to fund the student's school fees at the start of the school year and/or monthly expenses throughout the program. Myke has already started the school year and his initial fees were already paid for and thus, we're only targeting giving him a sufficient amount to cover his monthly learning spending.

Basic Estimated Expenses (10-month school year)

ItemEstimated Cost (USD)
Food Ingredients for Monthly Practice$60
Chef Uniform & Modules$20
Assessment & Certification Fees$20
School Organization Fees$20
School Projects Allowance$60
Student's Personal Allowance$40
Total$220

Future Goals

If community support exceeds our expected targets for Myke's expenses, the group plans to expand the scholarship program by providing monthly stipends to more differently-abled students in Tagum's Trade School.

We're also considering opening up support to active Steemit users in the Philippines who are currently studying in tertiary or collegiate level and in need of financial assistance.

Backer Rewards

We are extremely grateful to all of those who supported us by upvoting and resteeming our intro post. We know there'll be several others who would join our advocacy in Steemit and in the @fundition platform. As a token of our gratitude, we'll include your Steemit usernames in our heart cloud, that will be present in all @scholarsph's upcoming post. The current cloud represents all users who have upvoted our previous introduction post.

For those backers who would give an accumulated upvote or donations amounting to 20 STEEM or more, @scholarsph will award those supporters a once-a-day direct upvote in your posts using SteemAuto.com. The upvote won't be a significant value since the account holds little Steem Power, but each token upvote contains our deep gratitude for helping us achieve our vision.

Thank you and Mabuhay!

Thank you very much for the support. You and other backer's generosity have overwhelmed all of our initial targets. We were thinking we need two months or so to accomplish funding for Myke, but now, at week #1, we're considering supporting even more students. All thanks to the community!

It is an excellent project. We are delighted to be able to support what you are doing.

great programm and hope that it will continued to support more great people who really needs support, thank you for sharing this information with us @jazzhero, wish you continued success!

Thanks a lot! We're a bit overwhelmed with the number of people giving us support this early. Our sincere gratitude to you and to those who are part of #payitforward.

It feels great to see the platform making a real-life positive impact :) More power to you!

The A Dollar A Day project would be happy to help this program.

If one of your team could make contact with @Pennsif#9921, the organiser of A Dollar A Day, on Discord that would be most useful.

As an educator, I am very happy to be part of a project that aims to help students in their education. I have seen so many learners who suffer from lack of financial support from their parents. And although there are ways to earn while studying, it would be better to have a support system that would not only help students financially but also emotionally. This way, learners can focus more on studying, while keeping their drive alive!

Again, to the people behind scholarsph, thank you so much for choosing ny student Myke to be our first scholar! Living in a third world country is already hard enough for regular people, how much more for a person with disability! Hence, everyone's help, big or small, will surely come a long way. This will surely help change the life of my student. ☺❤

P.S. @jazzhero, thank you for taking the time to write this post and edit the video. I am very grateful! ❤

Hi there, @jazzhero!

I've landed here after reading @macoolette's entry for the Pay It Forward Contest and I must say this looks like an amazing initiative. Well done. 😃

PS: Thanks again for submitting my post to @curie.

Hey @trincowski, glad to see you here. Thank you so much for the support. Community response has been overwhelmingly positive so far.

I'll probably have less time for Curie and Steemit in general but it'll be for a great cause.

You and your blog totally deserved that vote. You're one of the most engaged users here on the platform in recent time. Continue being awesome!

With my short tenure here on Steemit, I have seen considerable number of "helping" projects to help others. This is one of the best projects I have seen so far. Great job and more power to everyone behind this amazing initiative!

Thank you for the support and resteem :) We're just starting out but we're quite happy that community support has been significant so far. We hope we'll meet our first target and help more students.

Welcome to Steemit! And I hope your enjoying your time here so far.

Wow, thanks a lot for the promotion. Support has been great so far from people who advocate for the cause just like you :) As @toto-ph mentioned, we already met the goal for the month due to direct pledges from some Stemians. And we may open up more support for more scholars soon.

We're really grateful! Thanks.

You're welcome. I guess it is time to look for the next scholar then. 😊

You're welcome. Upvote and resteem are the least I can do for now.
