El Quinteto Contrapunto in #mymusic [English - Español - Deutsch]

in #mymusic5 years ago (edited)

Today I bring the review of one of the most important groups in Venezuelan music history, a vocal quintet that managed to fuse popular and folk music with the methodology, techniques and treatment of academic music. A group that has been part of my musical training, great influence and example for me and many other musicians. El Quinteto Contrapunto (The Contrapunto Quintet).

Although classical music is nourished by popular music, many of the "academic" musicians look with a certain contempt at the music considered "not cultured". In underdeveloped countries that has been a major drama because it comes dressed with some ethnic embarrassment. This has been one of the causes that has made classical music not developed more forcefully in these countries, because of these folk, traditional and folkloric manifestations is where the most elaborate and refined music should be fed.

But there have always been musicians willing to break paradigms. And it was thanks to my friend, the musician Florentino Mendoza, that I learned that one of those risky musicians was his father Domingo Mendoza, who was part of one of the most emblematic groups in Venezuela, the "Orfeón Universitario" University Choir (of the Central University of Venezuela), who one day began to conceive the idea of arranging voices in which there was a tenor and four voices, each one fulfilling the work of one of the strings of the Venezuelan cuatro to do the accompaniment. It is for that reason that the final format is quintet.

But the birth process was not immediate. Domingo meets another Venezuelan musician in Italy, Rafael Suarez, who since 1952 was studying at the Accaddemia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. The latter made the arrangement for two voices of a wide repertoire of popular Venezuelan music that played between them.

Soon the two return to Venezuela and Domingo proposes Rafael to expand the repertoire to quintet format, completing the following conformation: soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, baritone and bass. In this way appears in 1962 the group Quinteto Contrapunto integrated by Morella Muñoz, about whom I spoke to in my post Morella Muñoz is #mymusic (English - Español - Deutsch), and Aída Navarro in female voices. The bass voice and the accompaniment in cuatro and guitar was in charge of Domingo Mendoza; as baritone, arranger and director Rafael Suárez, and as tenor Jesus Sevillano, someone of whom I will speak in more detail in a next occasion.

They soon signed a contract with a record label of one of the most important transnationals, as was Polydor and the success was immediate and surprising.

The Quinteto Contrapunto became an unprecedented phenomenon, both in Venezuela and abroad. However, in our country there had never been a similar event, because the passion that this group generated among its fans is compared by many specialists with the passion that aroused among their fans, The Beatles, at their best. The concerts of this vocal quintet filled up and the euphoric people sang all their songs asking one and the other incessantly.

Of course, the Quinteto Contrapunto influenced all the musicians of the time and today is still a mandatory reference for all musicians and music lovers of this country and the world.

Unfortunately the premature death of its director, at the age of 41, in 1971 marked the end of this project. Later the group had some reunions, but they did not give the group the continuity that everyone expected.

Music at the end of this post!
