Silvio Rodríguez in #MyMusic

Today I return to my subject of music and I do it with this space in which I talk about the music that marked me or that still today leaves its mark on me.

As I have already mentioned on several occasions, when I was a child and lived in Germany and Russia, our house was something like an embassy. Due to the fact that my father was an international correspondent, we were visited by all kinds of personalities, especially the Latin Americans who passed through that country. In that way we always received politicians, social leaders, students and because of my father being a person of the arts, we received many poets, writers, actors, theater directors, dancers, musicians and singers. Of course, the ones I remember the most was the latter because they always ended up singing and playing in my house. In this way, they paraded through the different houses in which we lived, such as Leonor González “La Negra Gran de Colombia”, the La Columna de Fuego group (which accompanied La Negra), Omara Portuondo, Los Papines, Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés, Ali Primera, members of Aparcoa, Quilapayún and any other number of artists that I don’t remember at this moment.

But today I am going to refer to only one of those characters that went there. In 1972 he was a young boy who still did not enjoy international recognition, a Cuban guy who was part of a movement that had been brewing since the late 60s and had become known as the Nueva Trova. That trip was his first trip abroad as an artist and he went to participate in the 3. Festival of Political Song, which took place in the city of Berlin. Her name:

Silvio Rodríguez

Silvio Rodríguez, 1968 [Source - Fuente - Quelle]

Silvio Rodríguez is considered one of the greatest Spanish-speaking composers and one of the most outstanding singer-songwriters in the world.

Listening to his songs was that for the first time in my life I began to understand what a singer-songwriter was, and at that time I was just beginning to play guitar, it seemed to me that his way of accompanying himself with that instrument was something masterful. That's why the first song I learned to play "plucking" on the guitar was "Fusil contra Fusil", one of his first compositions spreaded around the world.

But that was just the beginning of that connection. During my adolescence the obligatory repertoire among young people was that of this Cuban author, for which many of his songs were part of my repertoire. When I told in the article Serenades in #mymusic / Serenatas in #mymusic [English-Spanish-Deutsch], of the songs that I used to play, I emphasized the boleros, because it is the romantic genre par excellence of the Caribbean region, but Silvio's songs were a mandatory part of those serenades, including songs like "Óleo de Mujer con Sombrero" (which was my hit), "Canción del Elegido" or "Pequeña Serenata Diurna".

The hits of Silvio are countless, especially taking into account that only as a composer he has more than 500 songs.

But the impact of Silvio Rodríguez was undoubtedly worldwide and his direct influence on all movements of the Nueva Canción (New Latinamerican Song) is evident. With about 20 soloist albums, plus an infinity of collaborations and special participation with other artists, the music of Silvio Rodríguez is part of the Soundtrack of Latin America and my own.

Music at the end of this post!
