400 litres of diluted cyanide spills polluting nearby country park.

in #nature6 years ago

I'm lucky where I live in we have a large country park 5 minutes away but at the start of this month a spill of diluted cyanide went straight into a brook that feeds both the parks ponds.

The top pond, known as Adams pond has been most badly hit with over 100 fish killed, the pond is used for fishing but it is feared it will by years before it recovers.

The second and much larger Osbournes pond has also been shut to those who fish there and a warning to keep dogs away from the water. This is a place we regularly take our dog to and most dog owners are now avoiding the park altogether.
I had a walk down to the park today (without the dog) and thankfully the larger pond doesn't seem too badly effected and the ducks and swans seem OK.

As for when the ponds will be safe to reopen we have no word yet but hopefully the Environment Agency will continue to work on minimizing the damage and protecting the wildlife and come the summer we can return to enjoy the park and ponds.

This is horrible. Any idea what the long-term effects may be on the ponds and the wildlife? How in the world did diluted cyanide get into the ponds in the first place? Sounds like someone in industry dumped something they shouldn't have.

The cyanide was spilled during a delivery accident, not been able to find out exact details but the factory was right next to the stream that feeds the ponds.
In the long term the small pond will be hardest hit and take longer to recover but the full effects will take a while to show.

Oh no, that's awful! I guess we should be thankful it wasn't any worse ... but I think the company responsible should have to pay some kind of fine that is put towards recovery of the ponds.

Think it will all come down to insurance payout, the smaller pond will take years to recover the lost fish stock, just hope the poison doesn't spread to other wildlife.

That's just horrible - I hope the other wildlife will be safe too.

This is sad, somebody will be getting a nice fine somewhere...

Yes i think so, even though it was an accidental spill while the liquid was being delivered.
