Mother Earth - Are Humans A Cancer?

Well this post stemed from an interesting conversation by @penderis on my article about the end of the World. An interesting statement was made which said 'Humans are the current infestation', referring to possible damages to the earth that may bring about its end.

I then realized that I've come across similar statements by hardline environmentalists several times - describing humans as a cancer that the Earth would be much better without. While I respect everyone's right to an opinion, this perception is certainly one I do not share.

It is true that no other species have the ability to disrupt an ecological cycle like humans - not even close to the scale we've done. We have also been directly responsible for the extinction of quite a number of species with the Northern White Rhino soon to be the latest victim. Also, there's a distinct possibly that we'll be directly responsible for the demise of our species with the threat of a massive nuclear War always a possibility. Yes, despite all these I beg to differ on the opinion of environmentalists.

Before the coming of civilization cum modernization, there have always been checks and balances in nature. Don't be deceived into thinking that Mother Nature is a friendly host that protects all her inhabitants. The Earth has always been quite brutal and majority of the species in extinction today were not as a result of human interventions.

Humans have also devised several means to protect not just themselves, but the Earth and all her inhabitants. As self appointed captains of the Earth, we have done a decent job in ensuring her sustainability despite what the naysayers may think. New breakthroughs in technology particularly in the agricultural sector ensures that less strain is placed on our soils; We have effectively identified the vast majority of the Earth's species in existence and made comprehensive efforts to protect those in danger.

Even things that caused mass extinctions in the past, like an asteroid falling upon the Earth has been effectively addressed by humans, now ensuring that such occurrences will not likely happen, or have minimal damage if it does occur.

Humans have done a lot more good than we give ourselves credit for on the Earth. Yes there are some issues that need to be dealt with, but in the long term I think even Mother Earth would be grateful for such an alliance with our species.

Unless of course we bomb ourselves to death.

Whether we can co-exist and even improve on nature itself was never a concern for me, your posts, however, is reasoned as promised in your about with great information on our standing with our current habitat, it is good to know that we are mostly moving towards a better world where humans and habitat have balance and even improvement.

In my statement saying that we are the current infestation, I also said it will be nice to know nature will flourish, this actually does not concern me in the least, a tree is a tree and if they cut enough down maybe we all suffocate?

So be it.

"Nature flourishing" which was the hook used to state that humans are an infestation is just a side effect of our disappearance, a blanket statement I use to indicate how little I feel humans as a whole care for those around them and the world (opening myself again for nitpicking), so concerned with the "survival of the species" as though humanity itself matters, is that what patriotism is like? Just blindly having pride in something, never questioning that maybe everything else is better off if it did not exist?

I think that humans are a problem in any context, and with that I am not proposing solutions, I know, and it is ridiculous to think that it solves anything to say just get rid of us, it is a starting point for me, since offering to remove only a few maybe 50% of the population is a whole other type of uproar. I can't think of anything bad with humans gone, haha, since I won't be around.

Your post indicates a future where we will and are a benefit to our habitat, and maybe in that same spirit we are better at managing those who in our world are not good at co-existing with others. As I said my concern is not with nature and what we do, humans may be an infestation but more than that they are a canabilistic infestation, and as much as I will not support my countries "sports teams" or anything good being said about my country because as a whole the country is trash because of the few that make it trash - government. Humanity is pointless but compared to snakes we score above average but compared to any standard of - lets call it a standard of " you should be here in how you interact with each other" - we are worthless and so be it, maybe with time we will remove the factors that cause this but for now everyone is too concerned with whether they are human and have rights.

Unless of course we bomb ourselves to death.

Love the last line, it made me giggle.

DNA damage caused by modern agriculture, DNA damage caused by nuclear and fossil fuel energy, DNA damage caused by increased exposure to ultraviolet light, DNA damage from cell phones. Our way of life is a threat to our own future, we are too selfish to establish healthy ways of existing in harmony with nature.

If humans are a cancer on this earth, it's because of selfishness, and not because of humanity.

I cant understand why people entertain this absurd notion.

Dirt, trees, and animals found on earth share the same DNA as humans. We belong here. Perhaps the enviromentalists and others should consider, how can we better ourselves while being mindful of our enviroment. It adapts and evovles, at some point we should too. (I am meaning deforestation, fracking, toxic dumping, oil spills, forest fires etc)

Thank you for the read. Interesting topic

If people say humans are a cancer to the world then I'd also say the world is like a human host having cancer that is also going through chemotherapy. There are the the healthy cells(the humans who keep the world safe) and the cancer cells(those destroying the world). And there's the chemo (those circumstances that is making the world better). It is true that people keep overlooking the hard work a lot of people put in protecting nature.
