Understanding mutualism

Different types of relationships exist in nature between different species of organisms. This relationship is collectively referred to as a symbiotic or symbiotic relationship. One type of symbiotic relationship found in nature is called mutualism.

Mutualism is the relationship between the organisms in which both species are involved benefit to some extent along with none of the species being harmed. When examining a relationship, we should examine the species involved and see if they both receive benefits, such as food, shelter, protection, dispersal, or other auxiliary activities in the success of the organism.

Examples of mutualism

Many mutualistic relationships involve flowering plants and animals that interact with them, including various types of insects, birds, and bats. In this connection, flowering plants provide a source of food for animals in the form of honey. In return, animals provide services by spreading pollen from plant to plant flowers, increasing the spread of genetic information and also providing biodiversity.

Without reciprocity, interest will have to rely on other sources, such as wind, to spread pollen. In fact, over time, many flowers have evolved different shapes to match the bodies of their pollinating animals and draw them into flowers.

Another interesting example of mutualism can be seen in the relationship between some ant species and aphids (small insects commonly found in plants). Aphids obtain their nutrients by sucking liquids from plant tissues. After digestion, they secrete sugar and other substances as their waste. Ants eat substances that contain this sugar and get essential nutrients from it. In this connection, aphids provide food. Ants, because they depend on the continuity of aphids, become caregivers - ants provide safety, transport aphids from plant to plant, and even treat the aphids' eggs.
