Amazing Nature #169- Pallas cat a rarity of nature
Pallas cat a rarity of nature
Today I bring you another great feline, I feel there is much to talk about felines, usually, we know the tiger and the lion in the best cases, but there is such an incredible diversity of these mammals that it is worth discovering some of their main characteristics. Today it is the turn of the Pallas Cat. Come with me to learn more about this incredible feline.
Its scientific name is Otocolobus manul, a wild cat named after Peter Simon Pallas, a zoologist of animal origin who was the first to study this rare species. One of the most outstanding features of this species is its head which is quite wide, more than in other species, and its ears which are also really small. In addition, it is a cat with a great capacity to live in climates of extreme cold due to its thick fur.
Unlike other felines that have large limbs, this feline has short limbs in addition to being thick body, the color of its coat is usually gray, for there are varieties that show red tones, the average size of this species is 100 centimeters including the tail and can reach a maximum weight of 5 kilograms.
Its habitat is between Asia and the Middle East, in countries such as China, Siberia, and Iran, in these cold areas of little vegetation develops the Pallas cat, can be found at an altitude of 5000 meters above sea level and never below 1000 meters above sea level.
Of their behavior, we can say that they are like other solitary felines and that they meet with others of their species only in the season of mating. Their diet is based on the intake mainly of rodents of various types such as mice and rabbits, and hares on some occasions and when it can hunt some varieties of birds.
Their ability to climb is amazing, they love to spend time in the trees, while their resting place is usually rocky areas where you can find holes that allow you to shelter from the climate. With respect to its reproductive phase we find that this species has more offspring after giving birth than other species, its period lasts a maximum of 70 days and can have a maximum of 6 puppies, in the first months of life the mother should attend to the puppies that are totally defenseless to feed by their means as well as defend themselves from other predators.
Although it is a very good hunter and climber, is not very good running, with a trot a little clumsy for its short legs, and especially for its build, is a little overweight compared to other slender felines and full of defined muscles, the palla cat can live a maximum of 15 years in a natural state.
The palla cat is a very territorial mammal, as other felines mark their territory very well and are able to defend with life if someone comes to interfere in their natural limits. They are currently in danger of extinction due to the fact that many hunters look for them for their beautiful coat. In spite of its disappearance the countries where it lives have managed to make laws that try to put an end to its hunting, making it illegal, in addition, the Pallas cat has not been able to overcome any breeding program in captivity due to the fact that in the areas where they breed are warmer, this cat has problems with its immune system, but only in areas where there are high temperatures, when it is extremely cold the cat is kept healthy.
