Amazing nature #59 - Leopard seal
Today I bring you another one of those sea animals that are worth knowing, this time it is the leopard seal, this seal is well known for its bad character, positioning it as one of the most aggressive and violent creatures on the planet, and I do not doubt it, because it lives in extreme areas where it has to hunt and interact with other species that are as aggressive as them, the Arctic is like the desert, but extremely cold. Come and join me to meet this incredible creature.
The leopard seal is a mammal that is part of the phocids family and is known for its large size and its tendency to feed on other seals and emperor penguins, they are also very aggressive animals and generally very solitary.
Characteristics of the leopard seal
They have a dark greyish tonality with black spots.
They can weigh between 500 and 600 kilograms.
Their size ranges from 3 to 4 meters and their body is large and muscular.
The head is conical in shape and the neck is elongated, giving way to a wide chest.
They can live from 20 to 25 years.
Females of the species are usually larger than males.
They can communicate underwater by making high-frequency sounds.
They have a highly developed sense of sight and sense of smell.
Leopard seal habitat
The leopard seal usually lives in cold places, although there are some species that prefer warm places. They can be found in regions such as Antarctica, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and France. However, when they are young they tend to be migratory animals and can be seen in the Falkland Islands, which are far from their natural habitats.
Feeding the Leopard Seal
Like many other species of phocids, the leopard seal feeds on fish, krill and other aquatic animals. However, this seal species is also capable of feeding on penguins and other seals. They are excellent predators and are very mobile both in water and on land, so they have no problem hunting their prey in any of these environments.
Reproduction of the leopard seal
Its reproductive process begins between 3 and 6 years of age, in the months from November to January. During the mating process, leopard seals eat more food since they will fast during that time.
There is no information on their mating method, although it is believed to be through vocalizations. The gestation period is about 9 to 13 months depending on when the female believes it is suitable to give birth. The mother will take care of the calf until it is big enough to take care of itself.
Leopard Seal Threats
As for the predators that feed on the leopard seal, there are some species of whales, such as killer whales, although they are not usually attacked by other animals because of their large size.
On the other hand, the greatest threat to these animals are the humans who usually hunt them for their skins or for simple sport. However, there are treaties that have ensured that the numbers of these animals in natural habitats are not affected by human interference, and global warming is another latent threat to this species.
