Something seems wrong with my chokecherries

in #nature5 years ago

While wandering the farm in a sick induced stupor I happened to notice this deformaty on the tips of some branches. I checked different bushes and different stands and found the same thing sprinkled around. These are just a couple of the branches I found.

The normal chokecherry fruiting tip looks like below. Consistent sized cherries and not the elephantiasis ones.

In looking it is likely a fungus that has caused the problem. A fungus that creates "plum pockets" makes the fruit 8-10 times larger, distorted, and miscolored. Not much to do but hack off any I see and dispose of them. Fortunately it isn't extremely prolific as of now so I hope to keep on top of it.
